They've expanded a lot, wow.

SharePoint content is stored in SQL - either in a database or blob storage. You can create folders and make the sites appear to look like file shares; however, although Microsoft gives you that capability, most information architects cringe when it is used.

I'm not an IA and have no problem with folders. My IA friend and I always get into arguments about SharePoint and IA. I maintain that SharePoint's greatest strength is its collaboration ability; I'm not overly fond of using it for hardcore document management. As a CMS, I think the opinions are more split - there are certainly better options out there, but if you already own SharePoint as part of your O365 subscription, it makes it a no-brainer compared to spending tens of thousands implementing another package.

How do you like Confluence?

It's better than Sharepoint, anyway.

If you use JIRA, you should already be using it instead of Sharepoint, simply because of the tight integration you get between your ticketing/project system and your documentation system.

I’ve not personally used Confluence or seen it used in any major company I’ve worked at or consulted with in the last 12 years, so I can’t really comment. Of course, there’s a degree of selection bias there too - I’m generally brought in to help with SharePoint and other MS products so I wouldn’t necessarily work with groups who might use Confluence.

I’m sure as with most things, there are things it does better than SP and things it does worse. I think SharePoint has more features and as I mentioned before, with O365, it is a no brainer. I come from an infrastructure background and as such, I’ll always prefer working with the on-prem version of SharePoint because it is much faster than SharePoint Online and you have much more control; however, MS is adding features to the online version which will never make it to the on-prem version and their goal is to eliminate the on-prem version in the future.

I just got back from a partner event at Microsoft’s Manhattan office and let me tell you, they have some really cool things coming for O365.

What are you on about
It's pretty simple. When you have a high IQ you can squeeze more hours into a day and you should be paid for those hours. Also, the poster is not related to Trump. This information really should have come in a new paragraph as it is a distinct topic from the first sentence but when you have a high IQ you can run your thoughts together in a single paragraph and they let you do it.

It's been an interest for a long time, and has recently turned into an infatuation. We just got lucky on the family (gf's parents) buying a property that has the space for such an endeavor, and I've got free time time to pursue it, after taking care of the property. Hopefully this extends beyond a hobby and into something that can actually be useful and/or keep food in my stomach once my job gets inevitably automated out of existence.

Network Share Drives.

Not trying to be divisive, but file sharing is one of the easiest thing to offload to the cloud. Share point and one drive just make too much financial sense. Sure Microsoft security and data loss are issues, but you can buy that stuff (CASB).

Expect that Microsoft will take that option off the table by making their cloud services the only economic option for most companies. Just don't be the mail/collaboration/storage/back up admin who fights the move and loses spectacularly (sometimes their job) by ignoring the inevitable. Embrace the concept and become the expert.

Did you have to take a pay-cut or anything?
With Benefits it was pretty much the same. Maybe about 7-8 percent lesser. Also the bonuses are missing compared to pvt sector [ we just get cola 1-2% a year and then a performance bous of 1-3%]. But damm work life balance is amazing. Just get to work, get stuff done with no stress. Have time to go to the gym, spend time wth friends and it's just very stress free. I enjoy that much better than the higher pay but take your laptop home and work across different time zones.

I have no idea what that is, I just started in the business, coming from the high tech sector in Austin to Houston area.
High tech to the shits. +1 for gainful employment. My bro's been in the shit for 45 years and bills out at $140/hr.

I made the same decision 15 years ago taking a 17% cut in pay to move from contracting to working for the school system. Not having to waste 3+ hours daily just dealing with getting to and from work, the stability of not having to worry about layoffs, and the pension benefits outweighed the initial 17% loss.

I guess my only worry is ensuring that pension program will still be there 20-30 years later - assuming the state/city kept their dirty paws off of it - and actually invested it well like a business-person instead of like.... stupid politicians.

I'm looking at Kentucky as the perfect example there.

That's why I'm all in favor of 401ks. I don't dare place trust in others to invest effectively - and I don't trust them to not commit fraud.
