I knew I recognized you from Best Buy! I'd recognize that blue shirt anywhere! :awe:
Ouch. You set foot in a best buy without being paid to do so?

makin about 40k as an insurance underwriter. horrible dead end cubicle job that i hate. About 10 years ago I got a 4 year degree in business/MIS with comp sci minor, so yeah...I am doing markedly worse than I thought I would be.
oh, and this thread is depressing as hell. Thanks ATOT
I'll go in there if I need something STAT. I've bought hard drives there and other things when I can't wait for Amazon to overnight something. I tried to buy a high end tablet there not too long ago but the help including the "Samsung expert" knew less about tablets than my cat.
I can get the needing something asap part but you don't have an alternative? Fry's, staples, office<whatever>, local pc shop?
No Fry's, Staples can suck my nut, Office DepotMaxfuck is out of the way.
To be honest I don't mind kicking BB a little business. I think we need some B&M stores to survive. However if Amazon does start opening up outlets in Radio Shacks, all bets are off. BB can die with the rest of them.
I'm back in the Detroit office now (yay Detroit taxes), but yeah.I'm in this ballpark, also in a super low COL area (not far from rcpratt if I remember correctly - near AA right?)
I did a business one year that brought in about $130k on top of my 9-5, but that went to the wayside the following year. I ended up loving the change. With a business, I thought about it all the time. With an OK salary, the ability to go home and not think about anything until the next day, it is worth just coasting... for now.
oh, and this thread is depressing as h***. Thanks ATOT
Srs question - so what's the difference between 1099 and salaried?
Fair enough. I started boycotting BB when they required a valid phone number for any purchase (a $5 bargain bin copy of constantine at the time).
1099=pay your own taxes
salaried=set pay regardless of hours, employer takes taxes out for you
So what's $160k 1099 equivalent to salaried? not counting other perks.
AFAIK its the same. But I am not a tax guy.
What line of business do you underwrite?
I'm underwriting lawyers professional right now and some architects and engineers. Making a lowly $47K (with a 40% bonus if my book of business hits $1.2mm written premium). Half the salary I was making 6 years ago underwriting/managing directors & officers.
Right now it is good hours, stress free and I actually get paid to have medical insurance (about $22 a month). Close to home as well - about a 12 minute drive.
in 1099 you'd have to pay both parts of social security tax and medicare, so salary is worth at least %6 more if they are the same (on the first 115$k at least)
if you think this is depressing, you should see the bogleheads net worth poll threads

if you are not a millionaire by 35 at BH, then you're well below average
I do work comp insurance. In the territories I control, there are probably 200 agencies all submitting bullshit to me all day. I am inundated about 99% of the time, so its not stress free. Its the type of job where if you don't continuously work, you're doing yourself no favor as the work will just build up.
Used to like my coworkers but now I pretty much just want to murder most of them. Some of my best friends here have left because this place pays peanuts and sucks your soul away with limitless work.
I do live close to work though, I can't handle commutes so I planned that out accordingly. I'm about 10 mins from work.
I have a feeling I would just hate whatever job I was doing though...I got extremely sick of programming in college.
Just hatin it right now, I'm not quite sure why but every day I am in a bad mood.
