What do you do to get rid of that dirty clothes odor?

When I work out I sweat like a damn mess and my clothes are basically soaked when I'm done. And when I get home I just toss them in the hamper and leave it there for laundry time. By the time I do my laundry which is every 2 weeks or so, a lot of my gym clothes in there are still moist/damp. And over that time, if I leave the top open on the hamper, I can definitely smell a funk in that room. If I close the top I can still sometimes smell it but not as bad. And it's definitely worse this time of year when it's hotter out as my gym just runs a bit hotter.

What do you all do to help mask the odor until laundry time? Or do you just toss your stuff in the laundry immediately?

I'm curious the solutions people has for this. My wife has gotten annoyed and defintely noticed this recently and closes the door to that room often and when I open it, I definitely can smell that dirty clothes smell.

Found the problem.

You're letting stuff grow in your clothes, that doesn't really wash out easily. Start doing small loads every two days or so instead. Incorporate your bedsheets or towels if you feel the loads are too light, I guarantee you aren't washing those often enough.

I have found that more expensive and higher quality workout attire tends to smell less, probably because the material breathes better. I hate spending money on something I'm going to work out in, but it really makes a difference when it comes to smells.

Yeah stuff growing because they stay damp, leave them hanging somewhere for a while before putting in hamper, and wash more frequently. Your hamper is probably filled with fungus spores by now so it is self-seeding each time you put more damp clothes in. Defungify it with lysol or whatever.

Do you own your own clothes washing machine? If so there's probably a small loads setting.

Or... get ready for it... get some exercise by hand washing.

It isn't like some super duper stink or anything, it is just the normal sweat/dirty clothes smell. I just want to mention that. And I don't repeat clothes at the gym or anything either it's just one and done because I sweat so much.

Okay then you don't have to burn the clothes and declare the site a hazmat area, though I am always cautious about ways that mold and fungus can grow because it's not healthy to breathe and can accelerate spoilage of fresh produce too. A site HVAC system circulates that around, even if it has a filter/UV/whatever, air still circulates and it still has to pull it through the room(s) before making it to the filter.

Yeah it's definitely not getting moldy or anything that bad lol I know what mold smells like and am actually allergic to it too.

Damn I'm not a heathen you all!

Just wondering if anyone uses any products to cover up odors of dirty gym clothes lol.

Well it definitely smells like more than just you, because you are used to your own scent.

You just need to get them dry before putting in a container that holds moisture longer. Products, yeah, point a F A N at them.

Use high quality laundry detergent and use an extra amount to offset the smell. If that doesn't work, either throw them away or set fire to the offending clothes to kill off the stank bacteria.

Baking Soda as laundry detergent.

Depending on the clothes, ammonia.

Then you can launder more frequently due to the saved costs using cheaper cleaning materials.

I will definitely start hanging it up to dry and see if that makes a difference.

That's what I used to do when my bike shorts and jersey would soak through in the summer. It's curious to see how much salt one sweats off once they dry.

Normal to you, not to anyone else. We all think our sweaty gym clothes don't smell that bad because the smell is us. We are all wrong.

Let them dry out and maybe up the laundry to at least weekly.

Considering I live with 3 other people and they don't say it is like super funky or anything, I think it's safe to assume it's not super funky.

The things that DO stink the most though are my elbow sleeves. I do dry those out and put them next to my fan every time I get home from the gym. I wash them with wetsuit shampoo and then put them in some deodorizer as well and do that every week or two. Those can get super funky.

One time after I was scuba diving and hung up all my shit to dry, we came back to the hotel and was like WTF is that smell? Turns out it was my wetsuit that was just super funky. And I don't pee in it or anything either. After some googling, turns out microscopic plankton can get between your body and wetsuit, and die in there once out of the water, and that is what can get funky. That is what actually made me get that deodorizer stuff initially and since it worked on my neoprene wetsuit, I use it on those sleeves too.

I never said it smelled great lol. I said it wasn't deathly funky or anything. Just like the standard dirty clothes pile but a bit more potent.

Wife lets dank clothes sit for 2 weeks until you wash them? How dare she! j/k

Seems a bit silly, but you could stick an air purifier in that area and let it run 24/7. The best ones (Coway/Winix) are pretty power efficient. Besides other suggestions, Lysol makes a laundry sanitizer but the instructions suggest the clothes should soak in it before the rinse cycle for best results. That seems impractical, esp. for front-loading washers.

Normal smell for dirty clothes is no smell. Your clothes shouldn't be smelly.

Hoodie stays on the back porch until it's dry. Tees/shorts stay on the hamper until dry.

Ask someone after you've been sweating... a few hours pass while you stay damp and yeah, there's a scent. It might be masked by deodorant or body perfume but it's still there, so people bathe and clothes need it too.
