What do you do with old computer parts?

I feel kind of guilty just throwing some of this stuff away.

couple of BH-6 motherboards
Celeron 300s that over clock to 450
old memory
old compaq laptop

It seems like such a waste but no one wants this old crap. I save some of this stuff for years before I finally toss it.

What do you guys do? Are there any places to give this stuff away where it could get some use?

Go to the Distrubuted Computing section of this forum, and offer them up to anyone whos willing to pay shipping, or a small amount or whatever.

I'm sure someone will take it up.

it really depends on how old the parts are.

If they are worth my time to sale then I try to sale them.

I give them away.

People I know IRL get first dibs, but if no one wants it, I'll offer it up for shipping + paypal costs in FS/FT.

I collect old crap. Sometimes it's useful. There are plenty of charities that take stuff like that too.

Never throw it away, always recycle or reuse. In fact, there's a decent fine in my area if you're caught throwing that stuff away.

I've thrown it away.
Gave it to someone.
Keep it for spare parts.
Build a cheap server.

I guess it's safe to say I've done a little of it all.

You can recycle it. I just dropped off 2 computers and a monitor today. They will probably charge a small fee if the monitor/laptop doesnt work because they contain hazerdous materials that have to be disposed of. They might use the parts to make pc's for people with disablilties, seniors, schools, etc. In short, look a recycle place up on the net and bring 'em down. If they cant find a use for them at least they wont just end up in a landfill.

torture test em in various ways... drop a mobo in battery acid and another in real acid... compare the eat away/damage rate. I say try to sell em if you can as a lot for a cheapy price. you'll be surprise as to the uses those items can still provide. .... think chip burning.... a virus testing pc. or try to acquire the retail value and donate it to a legit company... then tax write off (ever donate a car? :-} ).

One of my friends is using a 200MHz Pentium I.. i'm sure she would appreciate something like this
But my mom's friend is giving me her old 700MHz celeron, so I guess I could get her something decent now
feels great to help out a friend.. especially when it takes no effort on your part

Hi Guys,
I appreciate the responses, but I already have more computers than I need. Heck with these $50 to $80 motherboard and CPU combo prices, there is only one PC left that has not been upgraded, my printer server. The other 5 are all over 900 MHz with most being 1800+ athlons or faster.

There isn't anyone around here I know that would benefit from me giving them these parts. Local charities won't take these parts either. In fact our local Goodwill won't even take a fully functional PC system.

We do have a basement but we're in the middle of remodeling our home and it's already jammed since we're living in it. Keeping stuff that I will never use is not a luxury I have right now.

The other problem is I just don't have time to box these items up with my house being torn apart, 3 kids under 8, and a full time job. Maybe I should spend less time on this forum! ;-)

Anyway, thanks again,
Pigseye

There is a guy at PCmech.com that buys all those old parts. He won't pay much, but at least they are being put to use, rather than being sent to a landfill.

OK, here's an update. Maybe I'll put this stuff up for sale. It's more than I thought.

Processsors
2 Celeron 300 (slot) that over clock to 450
1 Celeron 366 (370) that I had trouble overclocking to 550
1 Celeron 600 (370) that I over clocked to 900 worked pretty good for me as I recall.

Motherboards
1 abit BX-6 version 1.0
1 Abit VT6X4

memory - geez, i've got some old stuff
8 or 9 sticks of EDO memory 8 and 16MB
1 64MB SDRAM generic double sided
2 32MB SDRM PC 100
1 16MB Toshiba SDRAM
1 ?MB SDRAM Compaq memory

NICs
4 ISA 3Com Etherlink

Modems - don't know how fast but probably less that 33kb
1 ISA
1 PCI

Sound cards
2 ISA sound cards

Hard Drives
10 total
7 are very old 1 to 2 GB HDDS
2 are maxtor 5.7 GB
1 is a Compaq SCSI 2.1 GB

I don't know if any of the hard drives work.

Misc:
1 ISA parallel and serial port card
1 PCI SCSI card? Not sure what this is
1 PCI trident video card
1 Matrox Marvel Video card with breakout box, worked great with Win 98 for TV video capture. I don't think there are drivers for 2000 or XP
1 Compaq LTE 5300 lap top - real old I think it's only a P133. Hard drive is dead, will include charger
1 old Pinnacle TV card

If I did go to the trouble of packaging this stuff up and shipping it, I would like to get at lesat $14 "profit." That's the cost of a case of beer.

Would anyone want all of this stuff? I want someone to take it all. This won't be split up and shipped to different people. all or none!

I'm just too lazy to do anything with them. I have video cards, network cards, hard drives, cpu's motherboards, nothing too old but I do have a PIII 450. If I could get my sh!t together I could sell some of my HD's on the forum.
