I've often thought about creating some sort of wall hanging art, or sculpture.
Of coarse, only old geeks would recognize the parts, (is that a 56k modem?).

They do free electronics recycling every now and then. Usually just drop off a bunch of stuff then.

A consortium of the municipalities in the area put on collection days monthly that are held in different locations. The 21st of this month is the next one and as we're contemplating moving, I intend to clear out a ton of stuff. I'm hopeful we can fit it in one car as we have a lot of paint to get rid of too.

Depending on where one lives it can be free or for most, $10 per car full. Non-residents of the communities that are participating pay $50.

I'm ecstatic that they'll take paint in its liquid state. Most want it dried up.
I have a ton of that stored in rusty old cans, gallons and quarts. A guy I know said mix it all up and paint a fence or wall with it or something (he's a house painter). I guess some folks would have use for it, business even. Don't know what a recycling outfit would do with it all.
I've got 15 spinners stacked up in the closet in the computer room that I will never have any use for. Pulls from systems that I upgraded, etc. The largest I think is 80GB. Four are 10K raptors. Motherboards, memory, cases, two CRT televisions. The list goes on...
Myself, I would rip out the magnets from the HDs. I make custom refrigerator magnets from those, they are super strong.

Drop it off at Best Buy. They have recycling bins in the front entrance of most stores. Otherwise you can go to customer service and tell them you want something recycled.

Part of our yearly city wide pickup is an electronics pile.

This year my friend's son found a perfectly good 40" LCD and a PC that just needed a PSU.

I remember owning a really good 56k ISA-slot modem.
It was interesting to see a PCIe 56k modem show up here at work last week. I have no idea what it's still needed for, but there it was.
They're so small now. Looking at the photo of it, it looks like it's a modem controller chip and a tiny transformer, which is connected to what is likely a PCIe interface chip, and then various passive components around it as required by the chip manufacturers.
That's it.
That old ISA modem ran at least the full length of the ISA slot and was fairly loaded with components.

In the recycle bin (except CRT TV's I think). My work lets employees dump electronics/styrofoam and cardboard also.

Goodwill will take electronics for recycling (at least they do in the South Bay). They take almost everything (they charge for mattresses and don't take some baby stuff like child car seats), I just dump junk on them, they don't care. I had a giant over the range microwave, asked if they would take it, said sure so I dumped it in the box, filled the whole thing. Guy looked a bit dumbfounded. heh.

Now that everyone is on dialup and cell phones, would a 56k modem actually produce a speed of more than 5kbps?

How do you know?
Here's what happened in my case.

I store all the unused paint under the basement stairs on the concrete floor. One of the latex cans rusted through the bottom. The leak in the beginning was evidently small and as it oozed out, it dried around the perimeter of the can forming a seal. So the can is stuck to the concrete by a dried ring of paint.

But the hole in the bottom is still getting bigger. So when I go to move the can, it turns into a gusher. Now, air can't get in very well so it's not like it's totally out of control but it is definitely an 'oh-shit' moment.

I've got a can of oil base paint that's leaking right now. It's a very small leak and I have put it on cardboard until next Saturday when all of it is going away. I had no idea it was leaking until I moved it. It too, had more or less sealed itself to the concrete. It was stuck to the floor.

A lot of it ends up in the basement, sometimes I pull the circuit boards out then get rid of the casings.

Other times I just put it on my front lawn and it's gone in less than an hour. It's incredible the kind of stuff some people will take. Took the guts out of an old UPS even the transformer (they make good door stops) and someone still took the empty case lol.

Idealy I need to setup some bins to sort this stuff in, metals in one bin, plastics in another. Then when they get full I could bring to recycler to sort further. Not sure if any of the metal recyclers will take plastics though, but might be able to actually put those in the residential recycling bin. There's so many different grades though not sure how that would work.

I figure any plastic with a triangle on it is "recyclable." I throw that in the non-paper 1/2 of my recycling bin and figure whoever deals with that stuff knows what to do with [2], [4], etc.

I got a large postcard a couple of days ago about a once off recycling day around here, this is rare as hell, I don't remember getting such a notice for over 10 years. All kinds of stuff, hazardous, electronics, just a vast plethora of stuff mentioned.

The event is June 19, a Sunday, 'Free Drop Off Event'

9AM-1PM Golden Gate Fields Parking Lot

Golden Gate Fields is a horse racing track

Details at: www.stopwaste.org/onedayevent

Edit: I just hit the link and they want you to register for the event online. Seems weird! They actually want you to specify a particular 1/2 hour window.

Probably need to schedule employees/volunteers, and containers. None of that comes free, so they want an idea of how to plan.

The hours for ours today was from 8 to 2. We typically go out to breakfast on Saturday's so we combined the trips and decided to hit the recycling thing first. We got there about 8:10. They had signs by the road marked as entrance and exit with two people manning each. Once inside, cars were lined up in two rows with people directing traffic, checking information, taking or filling out paperwork and taking money. We never had to get out of the car. The first stop was household chemicals, the second was paint and the third was electronics. We pulled up to each stop and the pertinent materials were removed.

The whole thing from start to finish took 8 minutes. They run a tight ship and move people through at a good clip. There were probably 50 people at the very least running the operation. There were too many warm bodies to count as the thing was set up in an enormous school parking lot.

Sweet. Put out a printer and old landline phone for garbage collection and it got picked up -- they don't take just anything now.

I fear/expect to have nowhere near as smooth an experience come that Sunday, which is exactly 4 weeks from today. Reasons are this:

1. This is a one off, AFAIK they don't do this periodically.

2. I stupidly chose the first 1/2 hour period, 9-9:30AM. I figure it will be chaotic while they're trying to figure things out.

Well, I'll try to have my stuff sorted into what I think are the ultimate breakdowns, but probably that won't suffice exactly.
