The engineering of turbo diesel. Do a search, diesels are far more expensive and complex than gas motors and will last at last 3x as long. My friend has a 86 with 400K miles and still gets mid 15's.
Smae reason the golf TDI gets 53 mpg while the gas golf gets around 35.
