What do you guys think of this mobo with a PhenomII X3 720?

It's pretty kick arse, worked with plenty of them...not sure about overclocking them (not many customers ever ask for that ) but if the baby GA-MA78GM-S2H is anything to go by then it should OC pretty bloody good.

I am thinking about upgrading my E2160 machine to the same parts, except different memory. I'm curios to hear about your results regarding overclocking etc.

About a year ago, everyone scoffed at triple cores.

Nice to see they actually do have a market.

I think people would buy the chip even if it was still dual core, as long as it overclocked decently and offered good performance for the price. If the Phenom II x3 720 was $100 more the story would be different...

thats a great board but i would of went with the 790X version, its $20 cheaper and doesnt have onboard video.

I see in your sig you have 2x9800GTX cards.
From my understanding SLI will not work as this board is a crossfire board, but I dont know for a fact.

I don't know what the deal is with geforce and nvidia boards but right now the only way to go seems amd's 790 series... unless im missing something? are there any good SLI boards that are made for the PII's?

From the reviews I've read, the NVIDIA 750a SLI chip set might not suck. In fact, it appears to be better than 790/SB750 WRT USB and SATA performance.

ASUS has what looks like a decent new board based on the 750a, but I haven't been able to find enough info on it to make me comfortable with a purchase.

I thought it might be a good board for me, since programming is my major use for the new machine, so disk performance is important. I'm running a 4870, but I'm almost entirely uninterested in CrossFire.

The drives I'm going to go with don't support NCQ anyway, though, so I'm probably going to go with a 790/SB750 board, so I can be just like all the cool kids. Er ... I mean, I'm probably going to go with an AMD based board with the hope of better support and perhaps better OC action.

I wanted onboard video. This rig won't be for gaming initially. There won't be any discrete GPU's installed, at least for now. It's for music production. It's also a contributing reason why I bought the PII 720BE with unlocked multi over the PII 710. Having onboard video might prove unstable when increasing HTT speeds, I dunno. But with the BE I can just concentrate on raising the multi and bumping up the core voltage a bit. The case I purchased is one of the quietest around with very good airflow (big slow moving fans).

I have a GTX295. Don't need an SLI board for that. Plus, I have the option of going Crossfire in the future if I wish. But for the most part, this rig is strictly for CPU power, memory and hard drive space. If the retail AMD hsf is too loud, I'll replace it with a Tuniq, or a True. Depends on what fits in the case without removing the huge case door fan. And the retail hsf is just aluminum (no copper or heat pipes anywhere), so uncertain how effective it will be.

I received all the parts except the mobo, which is coming from CA. So takes a bit longer. Tracking says I should get it by Friday. So I'll have a weekend project.

wow, i checked that case out, it looks really nice, the large fans, the colors... cool.

GL with your new setup, hope everything works out for you, and there is no RMA's to be had.

i was actually looking for a case as well when i build my new system, i was going to settle with this one for $55 at a local computer shop, but I would of had to buy the fans seperate and they charge $9-20 for fans...

thx for sharing what you got because im going to get that exact same case

FWIW, I had nearly identical HDD performance between my 790GX & Nvidia GF8200 motherboards. I think, by default, the AMD 790GX driver does not enable "advanced disk performance" in Vista.

When copying files to a USB hard drive, the Nvidia board was noticeably faster.

On the Geforce board, I had a Phenoom 9850 - not the Black Edition - overclocked to 3.2 Ghz. That's a 600mhz OC w/o the benefit of ACC.

My pleasure. One thing about the case. It has "tooless" drive and expansion card installation.
I would not use these. Always use screws for a hard drive, DVD, or graphics card. The tooless connectors are very simple to remove, just take your time and look before you leap.

And another thing, the Power supply is mounted at the bottom of the case, and the intake fan on the power supply rests on the bottom of the case. There is a filtered opening for air intake, but there is only about 1/4 " of clearance at the bottom of the case for air intake, so I feared that it would suffocate and overheat my PSU. So I mounted my PSU upside down so it draws it's air from within the case. I had to drill new holes in my PSU because the holes in the case of course did not line up once I inverted the PSU. Keep this in mind before buying this case.

All other aspects of the case looks really good. Roomy and the large slow moving fans will be very quiet and move a lot of air.

I bought the MA790GP and a Phenom II 710 3 just the other day, along with an Antec Sonata III w/500 Earthwatts PSU and 2GB of Corsair at the local Frys just the other day, after researching for several weeks to find the best reviewed combo. I have been burning in Vista Ultimate 32 bit for 48 hours. Not a single glitch. Posted perfectly first time. Vista is behaving perfectly, and system seems very fast.

I am not OC'ing, and I am not a gamer. I develop database apps for the chemical industry, so I need reliable development platform to run Visual Studio 2003, 2005, 2008 and SQL Server and Oracle everyday, all day.

So far, I am thrilled. I bought locally off the shelf, just in case there was a DOA. I didn't want to deal with RMA via mail. This way if it croaks in the first 15 I can just return to Frys and let them deal with it. I am using the onboard video for now because I just don't need the extra video power of a card for my development. I'll add extra memory and maybe a good video card later once I get all my software loaded and the system proves out for a month or so.

Good luck with yours.
