I really miss VoodooExtreme.com before they eventually went to IGN, and how enthusiast sites were just that, and not some quick way to gain advertisers + free hardware.

Spending hours and hours downloading the latest game demo over dial-up, only to have it hang at 99.96% complete.

sure, there was no google or youtube, but geocities.com was basically a huge, free porno site, there were no pop-ups or annoying flash ads, and midis as far as the eye could see

I think there is an internet time machine/ web history project that lets you go back and look at snapshots of parts of the web from years past

ICQ kicked msn ass.... only now is msn almost at the same level of functionality as prebloat icq (circa98-99)

edit:

Downloading Motorcross madness CD-ISO( in 150+ rars) on a 28.8k... my parents were pissed that month.
But back then everything was sooo easy to get... but it took forevvvvvvvvvvver.

Scanmasters. Every horny nerd would post these on their site before Playboy put an end to it.

In fact, the porn images back then were so much better, larger resolution, easier to find, no popups, and no signup. Commericalization really killed it for me.

I use to order all my computer hardware from NEC (forgot the url for it).

And I'd just like to remind every man jack present that it was our very own underclocked, god bless his soul, who had to post several times and basically jump up and down (and pm me) about how good the whole VA dealio was before anyone at all even began to take notice.

And the rest was history!

To Richard!

When Dell had all of the crazy f-ups and hot deals. That was the greatest hot deal time. I still have my free 1800FP at home, still going strong.

I miss BBS's and pre-browser internet stuff that required telnet. It just seemed more cutting edge then and now it's just bleh. I need something new.

.Plan updates from big developers, pre-blogging.

Getting all my crap from Walnut Creek FTPs (demos, patches, etc).

Other Sites worth mentioning: LumTheMad, Stomped, Redwood, QuakeCommand.

AllAdvantage and all those pay-to-surf companies.
It was ROFL free money by leaving your computer on to macro movements.

ValueAmerica - best hot deal ever, and you didn't have to scam anyone like the people who used pay-to-surf programs.
Ebay was 99.9% scam-free and most people were just using it as a garage sale, not trying to become millionaires.
Mirsky's Worst of the Web.
Usenet the way it used to be.
Plain text emails from listservs and almost no spam.
