$150 upgraded cable for the Senn HD650. $250 for the Sony D-NE20 Discman. $400 for the Ray Samuels Audio SR-71 portable headphone amp. I never tell people I know how much I paid for stuff, they'll never understand.

Still trying to figure out how my AMEX's total last year's $8K when my NAD + B&W stereo + IC and speaker cable is only $3K.

lots from literally 10 years ago...I had a sort of major setback since...

$40k down on a $115K house, then another $40k into it...it was pretty jazzed up.

$10k on stereo gear

Various cars/parts. When I was looking for a 98 Nissan 240SX SE at 10-15k people thought that was nuts. Got one at $8800, Driftkat.com my site.

certain books that are hard to find....still wish I had all the D&D ones. I have a lot of books though (500+).

however mostly people are surprised how much I save....I am nearly employed as a full time deal finder. I average 50-60% of MSRP on new stuff.

Alot of people I know can't understand why I spend so much on camera equipment...yet all of what I spent doesn't even come close to adding up to more than what 1 camera would cost a Pro.

My reef aquarium. Not sure the total of what I've put into it, but it's probably too much.

The topic is oddly worded, but I'm trying to see what people spend a lot of money on when most of the people they know jsut can't understand that type of purpose. Maybe you bought a $10,000 television, or you have special light bulbs in your house that are $20 each, or you paid $5000 for your dog.

If you have something like this post what it is and why it's worth that much to you.

I'll start. I have a $1,500 bicycle. When you really start to take mountain biking seriously, they're like PCs, and you want better performing componenets. My bike is up to about $1500 right now, and the next upgrade will put it around the $2000 mark, when I can afford it. Why do I do it? Because a nice bike is more fun to ride, and less likely to break and cause you to crash.

What do you do to protect your bike from thief?

Ahh another 'insane' purchase I made. A mountain bike when I sold my 88 T-Top Mustang GT for college in 1993.

94 Marin Bear Valley SE about $875 with a Nice Lite!, Krypto Lok, Kabelteck. about 20 lbs. Below list, but I was looking at $1000 bikes. It became my car..my ex wife's 1986 Honda Accord hatchback served non-bike duties.

This is an interesting thread to me.

Most have no idea what camera gear costs.

You ever show them what there $20 camera does vs your rig and they are like "wow I thought only Pros can do that, it's like a magazine shot"

The most expensive thing that I own is my LCD monitor, I guess...and that was "only" $550 or so. Well, there's my car too, but at $2000, I hardly "paid so much" for that in the grand scheme of things.

Our new vehicle was expensive, but I have an easier time spending over $100K on a vehicle versus spending $10K on a TV.

I'm not even going to bother discussing clothes because 99.9% of forum members here have no concept of the value of well-made, high-end clothing.

I have a few pricey things but for the most I paid for it myself others were gifts:

Personal walkman stuff: ~ £1125 ($2k!) on personal music! (worth it to me as I commute, but still a bit over the top but what the hell )
MZR30 £330
MZR50 £300 (smaller hen MZR30)
MRE900 £220 (really small player with 80hr battery life!)
3rd 20GB Gen iPod £275 (mp3 player but I still prefer my MD stuff and sound; gift)

PSP 2 games + delivery + tax £380 ($684) for my commute, otherwise I wouldn't get one)

23" Sony LCD £2100 (27 months old now) ($3780)

My mobile phone is also pricey @ £330 ($594) but this was my 21st present) P910i

Sony Vaio 12" Laptop R600 £1250 (retail was a sweet £2k at the time! this was a gift)

I have a Cannondale BadBoy 02 that cost £700 ($1260)

My glasses are also pricey. Oakley A wires + prescripted Oakley lenes + coats ~ $500; Oakley Why 3's + prescripted clear lenses ~ $670; Armani frames + lenses ~ $350.

That is about it for me.

The stuff I buy is quality and all apart from the MZR50 still works. I like my stuff small and exactly how I want it. I don't spend on useless crap.

I don't smoke and I am a light weight and hardly ever drink so I save a lot of money that way!

We get raped by the £ to $ thing I'd love to spend less if I ever could.

Excessive to some but not to me. The stuff I spend money on I use every day or at the very least a lot. I figure I am going to use something often I can afford to spend more on it. I'll of course end up saving for it longer though

Yea, people also think MP is everything....its very sad. That $100 5 mp camera isn't going to give you anything but pure crap.

Every 2-3 years or so for the past 6 years, I dip into the ole savings and splurge on computer(s) and network equipment or buy up the technical assets for small businesses that flop and people constantly scratch their heads when it comes down to wtf I plan on doing with it when it arrives. Currently have my eye on a compaq drive array and attached NAS.

Did you buy another bike, or just upgrade the kona? I'm surprised you already spent that much, since you just started really riding within the year, didn't you?

Yeah, it's still the Kona, it looks like this, now. And yeah, I jsut started last summer, it's been less than a year, but I'm really enjoying it. My next upgrade is probably going to take me away from the Kona, though. I'm looking at getting a Santa Cruz Chameleon frame.

$300 for stereo equipment doesn't seem like a lot to me. Maybe if you said $3000.

Your carpet is very dirty ,, clean it

Your friends must be idiots if they can't understand buying a house. Remember the topic of this thread is not "What did you spend alot of money on?"
