What do you take to help you sleep, and side effects

At bedtime, my mind wanders a lot, and it is not unusual for me to lie awake for an hour trying to relax and fall asleep. So when I need a good solid night's sleep and a poke is not in teh cards, I'll sometimes take either half a benadryl tablet, or a melatonin.

Wondering if anyone noticed these side effects:

Benadryl: fall asleep within 30 minutes, almost always have very vivid dreams, sometimes a little hard to get out of bed, drag for an hour afterward.

Melatonin: good solid sleep, easy to wake up after 7 to 7.5 hours.

What do you take for sleep?

Used to take lots of things when I worked nights. All it did was destroy my health. Finally had to quit the night job.
I got better, a LOT better.

I recommend one of those programmable mood lights that help you fall asleep. Its weird the first couple nights, but after a while you will like it.

For when I need to have a solid night sleep due to a problem, I take Lunesta, but I try to avoid taking them due to their cost and they make water taste like aspirin. When I just need a good night sleep, over the counter wal mart brand sleep aid works fine. I only take one though, if I take 2 I feel like I'm dragging for an hour or two after I get up still.

Lunesta works pretty well, but kaotik's right, there is a weird water taste thing in the morning.

Over the counter stuff takes me forever to wake up the next morning, though...

I should mention that when I read in bed, it usually relaxes me and I can fall asleep in a few minutes. Wearing those squishy earplugs (the individual ones you roll and put into your ear canal) helps a lot to drown out distracting noises. The "help" is only needed maybe once or twice a week, usually Sunday night when I have to get up early Monday.

I wish it only lasted the morning (the water taste). It normally last 2 days for me, I hate it because all I drink is mainly water so it makes things a bit rough on that front (normally just drink a lot more green tea or gatorade).

marijuana. its been effective at helping people sleep for thousands of years without adverse side effects.

i have those nights quite often. mind racing, youre thinking about everything under the sun. 3 hours pass and you need to wake up in 4 hours. its awful.

but ive learned. dont even give yourself the chance to lose sleep. ALWAYS have a bowl on the side ready for the night time. you just might need it.

I have a cord of firewood in my yard that is just begging to be split. A couple sessions with Mr. Axe will make me sleep like a baby for a few nights.

I'm gonna write this solution down and see if it works for me next time I have to take one. Thanks (for both the possible solution and the sympathy on the taste issue)

2 Kids under 3. I'm out within 5 mins of lying down. Side effects can be pretty involved.

Reading works best for me, too - both at bedtime and for when I wake up at 3am and start thinking about something I need to do at work, or whatever.

The more boring the book is, the better it works. History books are pretty good for that.

I use cold temperature.

Take a cold shower and run cold water over your head. It will literally force your frontal lobe to shut off. High brain/head temperature is associated with insomnia. In general, your body is supposed to be cooling down before you sleep. You can speed this up with a shower at night and keep turning down the hot as much as you can tolerate without jolting your system.

I also like pepperment tea. Again... the menthol makes you feel cool so you can lay down with a blank mind curl up and fall asleep.

Don't eat before bed, or if you do make sure its salty

Oh, and I totally know what you mean by mind racing. So much stuff going on in life, it's hard to not think about those things. Especially when you are running around all day trying to get stuff done. You don't have much time to think other than the time you lay in your bed at night.
