What do you think about internet sharing?

Would you like to share the internet connection with your neighbors at home?

I have couple variants:

NO
YES, I'm ready to connect to someone for free
YES, I'm ready to share my internet for free
YES, I'm ready to use shared internet and make payments together with someone

Any thoughts?

I'd change the title and write "sharing your internet connection" or something. Otherwise it looks like you're talking about sharing stuff through the internet.

Anyway: NO because I don't want extreme lag while gaming just because the neighbour fired up torrent.

And even if this was not an issue (i.e. it's an old lady that just checks the mail and facebook), I would surely not share the connection for free. Why make an effort if I get nothing in return?

I already talked to my buddy about this. I will hopefully be moving into the APT next door to him, and already told him he can use my wifi for $5 a month. He doesnt even have internet now, and he would only use mine to look up quick things, check craigslist etc..

You would probably want to get a router that can limit bandwidth per port. And run a hard line from that bandwidth-limited port for them to connect their own router to. Otherwise you will probably suffer whenever they decide to hog all the bandwidth. Or if you want to share a wifi then you'll want to get one of the more expensive routers that can limit bandwidth per device so you'll at least have the option to go in there and set limits on devices if you start to lag out. The router might cost more, but there are large potential savings to be had. Personally I'd rather have my own router, even if it was just a stub off someone else's modem. I dont think comcast would be too happy if you buried a bunch of ethernet lines to all your neighbors houses, but I'm not sure what they would actually do about it.

It'd be like what I read where ancient telephone service had party lines. Was that 1930s or something?

Sometimes when I'm traveling, people share their internet service with me, except they don't know

Actually we still had a party line in 1966 with a four digit phone number.

And no I'm not sharing my internet connection.

You do not have a choice to share I think if you choose comcast.
I could be wrong but from what I read it seems to be that way.

Yeah, I've let neighbors/roomates use it for free. It's not a big deal if you have a decent residential router (most that run 3rd party/open firmwares) and know how to set up QoS to prioritize your traffic over theirs. I put them on a separate, unbridged subnet for security reasons. You can be held liable for their usage, though, like if they decide to run a tor exit node that's spewing elected official death threats/spam or violate copyright etc.

I've also shared it with 4-5 neighbors when I was a kid by digging shallow trenches to their houses and laying cat 5 in them. Worked pretty well and paid for our broadband. Time Warner didn't care, although most cities tend to get pissed about this sort of thing even if the trenches are just several inches deep. This was before HD video or torrents, though.

I'd be willing to share my Internet if I could set up a guest connection that routed everything through TOR.

I haven't figured out how to do that yet.

Who knows what people will download. No way I would let people on my pipe even if they use a computer a house over.

I let my neighbor use mine. He's 75 years old and just got his first laptop 2 years ago. He uses it once a day for 10 minutes at about 5 a.m. to check the weather for fishing (I've checked the logs). And he wan't's to pay half! Of course I don't let him, but I did let him pay for the extender we needed to reach next door.

Would I let a younger person who might torrent use it? Hell no.

Sounds ok on the surface but its the old buggers who end up having their computers buggered into bots with who knows what being pumped through them. I've read of cases of innocent people getting busted because of stuff that was transiting through their set-up unawares.

In my experience, it's young people that "think" they know what they are doing that you really have to worry about.

The answer would be NO. It's not about money or willingness to share. I just don't want to be a full time security manager, who monitors everything he is doing. Which begs the question what is this person going to be doing online? I'd rather not know.

Will he downloads pirated movies and music, and will the internet police will be looking to me to pay $150,000 per movie? Is he downloading internet porn and of what variety? I don't want my laptop seized by the FBI, because Jared, who I thought was an upstanding citizen, has a thing for under-aged girls.

And suppose that Jared's son, who admires Islamic fascists, wants to go Syria to bear arms, and brags about it on his Facebook page, using of course my internet connection.

Don't forget, everything we type, upload, download or look at on the internet is being collected by Big Data. I'll be responsible for everything I do or say or look at, but I sure as heck don't want the actions of someone else to be associated with my profile. There is no internet privacy.

First it may be illegal. However, I am sure it happens in some areas. If you jump on an open network and use it without permission, you are breaking the law, so be careful. The connection belongs to the ISP. The home owner has a contract to use it. If he tells all his neighbors to use it he could be breaking the conditions of his contract. Sure you could have a lan party or have occasional guests at your house use it. But if you purposely let a neighbor use it then you could be charged with a crime. I kind of wonder what kind of service agreement is needed for public places like a Restaurant or a school or a hospital if they have an open wireless for the general public or customers to use? That may require a more expensive contract.

This is kind of like going to a smorgasboard restaurant and sharing your food with someone who did not pay to eat.

It might be fine if it does not cause net congestion. My phone uses WIFI at work and at home.
