My dad was hurt in a car accident and we ended up on welfare. Eventually my dad had to be put in a home and my mom went to school. She graduated and couldn't find a job for what she had trained for. She got hired my the US army. The job was almost 60 miles away from home. She was there a few months and our old Morris broke down. She still went to work every day. I remember waking up one morning as she headed out. I watched her walk out to the edge of our yard and very carefully go through the barbed wire and start walking through the fields headed toward the highway. She was hitch hiking to work every day. That night when she got home I was crying and told her she need to just stay home for us ( me and my siblings). My mom sat down and held my hands and told me. " Welfare is a hand up, not a handout. We can do better". There is so much that happened after this that was both horrible and amazing. Anyways. I'm painfully aware of the positives and negatives of social programs. I could write a book.
