What do you think of Maxtor 160 gig, 8 mb of cache, 7200 rpm HD? It has a end transfer rate of close to 40 MB.

Adul yeah but thats only in the datebase. What do you think of this HD? Have you ever seen a IDE HD with a end transfer rate close to 40 MB ? A end transfer rate of close to 40 MB is really fast for a IDE HD. But i like that i has a low 12.4 ms access time as well! I wonder if the HD feels a lot faster than other HDs when it gets like close to full sense it has close to a 40 MB end transfer rate. I am guessing it still feels pretty fast.

well I went from a maxtor 540x drive to a WDSE 80 Gb drive. I noticed a small increase in speed

The reason for the oddly lower access time and high inner STR is because the drive tested in the database is short stroked according to Eugene over at SR. So not all 160GB versions of that drive will perform the same, the 68GB/platter will be the fastest while the 60GB and 80GB versions should be somewhat slower, though the 80GB may have a higher outerzone STR. Drive manufacturers need to stop with all the different drive configurations listed under the same part# making it very difficult to impossible to know what you are getting until you actually have it and can examine it.

I have an older WD 8.4 5400RPM hard-drive and that thing does make this weird clicking noise from time to time. I have no idea why though....sounds like the heads are touching the platters....

Am using the 120gb version now. I can somehow check the temperature of the drive through Sisoft Sandra. That's one cool feature.

all of maxtors hard drives have temp sensors on them, although they're not the only ones that do it

Its nice to know how hot its getting though.
