My son's been asking about a gaming rig for some time. This is kinda what I've put together. The last time I built a computer was back in the Radeon 4870 days and I did a bit a gaming, but not really in that stuff much anymore.
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/wtQ4Ls

  • In terms of motherboard/cpu I settled on the highest AMD socket AM5, since the previous gen is more less finsihed.
  • In terms of motherboard I wanted to get something with AMD X670E chipset since that seemed to be the highest and I also wanted to get onboard wifi for flexability, he will likely be connected via ethernet.
  • In terms of processor the Razen 7 7700x semed to have the highest marks.
  • Not sure about ram, I was reading 32G is plenty for a gaming rig.
  • Not sure about video. I wanted something high enough but not blowing the budget. I've read the (RTX 3600) video card is more less the limiting factor in your build and sets the rules for more/less what you can play.
  • Case: Was the highest rated case, not sure about anything else.
  • Power Supply: Was the higest rated power supply. I think I upgraded to this one because PickApart told me my board needed dual 8-pin and the previous (cheaper) supply only had one.
  • Cooler: I wanted to go liquid for the noise and I believe this will fit in my case.
  • Hard Drive: It's not on the list, but I'm looking at the WD Extreme SSD M.2
I'm looking primarily am I wasing money on some components, could I downgrade some or if I should go higher video card etc.
In terms of games he plays, he gave me this list

Valorant
Terraria
Warzone
Atomic heart
Call of duty franchise
Doom eternal
Titanfall

Thanks

I changed the video card, PSU and case. The video card I chose in much better and cheaper than the RTX3060. The PSU was WAY over priced for some reason. The 850 watt version of that unit is $80 cheaper. The new GPU I chose didn't fit the fractal case but it fits in the Lian Li 216 and it's a great case. This is essentially the same PC that my daughter and I both have and we are really enjoying them. It will have no trouble playing the games you have listed at high refresh rates.

There are currently some bundles available with the Ryzen 7000 series and ASUS motherboards that might save you a few bucks as well. Check Newegg and Amazon. See here for Newegg: https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?d=7700x+motherboard+bundle

Here is one on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/16-Thread-Un...mzn1.fos.2b70bf2b-6730-4ccf-ab97-eb60747b8daf

Thank you very much,

What's your opinion on the water cooling and it seems the case you swapped out works. I did see the bundle, it's a few bucks difference.

That's a huge price difference. So I see you swapped the Nvidia out for the Radeon, what's the difference. I went with Nvidia because I heard about driver incompatabilities etc... People were telling me the best builds are Nvideo card and AMD CPU...

My daughter has a $50 air cooler on her 7600X. I have a $150 AIO on my overclocked 7700. Neither one of us have issues with temps. Air coolers will last longer and have less trouble since the only moving part is the fan. I personally prefer the look of an AIO so that's why I chose it. My daughter didn't care about looks so the air cooler made more sense.

I've had both Nvidia and AMD now for the GPU and haven't had trouble with either one. I chose AMD this time for value. Nvidia is charging way too much for their GPUs in my (and many other's) opinions. The card I linked has more performance, more vRAM and will age better than the 3060. The 3060 is fine for 1080p and light 1440p. The 6800XT will run 1440p fine and also some 4K and do it for less money.

OP: I didn't see this mentioned initially, what resolution will you be using to game on?
A PC designed around 4K AAA gaming (with RT?) is much different in some aspects to someone looking for high-FPS 1080P.
