What do you think of quake 4?

Today i got my student loan, and like so many other people i felt like wasting a good part of it on somthing i dont really need but is kewl anyways. Shops never sold titanium/gold earings, i couldnt find a titanium battlesword and the new ipod just didnt do it for me. So i decided ill spend it mostly on booze and buy a game. I got quake 4 since ive never ever played a quake game before. I was expecting it to be about an earthquake or somthing? apparently not, ive played through the first few levels and it seems ok. Its doom 3 with cyborgs, less scary environments and a hopeless shotgun. I think its ok, should keep me amused for a few hours. Ill update if my opinion changes as i havent gotten very far yet.

So who else has played it? Think its good/bad/ok?

I thought it was great fun - better than doom3 for me. The shotgun and most of the other weapons get better during the course of the game when they're upgraded. The final boss was a dissapointment though..

I dont hate it, but I'm not getting the Quake feeling from it... It feels too much like a fast Doom 3.

The ending levels are great, I enjoyed the very beginning and it got me in the quake mood but mid-game the game felt just like Doom 3 with diff opponents. MP is fun if noobs wouldnt get so many luck shots.

Quick FYI to the OP.

As an FPS gamer you should know that the original Quake was one of the key games in the history of FPS, if not the key game that really helped to launch the genre. It was a huge step forward from the icky graphics of the original Doom. Quake II was another single player campaign that took place on Strogos. Quake III was online multiplayer.

BTW, give the original Unreal single-player campaign a try if you're looking to play some single-player FPSes.

Let's hope that Unreal Tournament 2007 kicks ass and helps to reinvigorate the genre of online multiplayer FPS.

I think the game is fine and gets better (and better looking) as the game goes on. I think the game plays like Elite Force which Raven also made. It looks great and plays well but its nothing special nor does it offer anything new.

I would say its a 7.5 out of 10...not great but certainly not bad.

Its a patched Doom 3, now you can hold a flashlight with some guns!!

The single-player is a lot of fun (I have no idea what everyone is complaining about; it's far superior to Doom 3). I have not tried multiplayer yet.

Quake 4 is decent, but it's no Quake 2.

Buyed both fear and quake 4, finnished fear in 8 hours, it was the game of the year for me.

Started playing Quake 4 after that, and DAMN, does this game sucks after you've been playing fear !!!

I would say BORING.

Still looks great, but so was DOOM 3...

I liked it. I finished it last Sunday and I agree that the final levels are awesome. Especially the parts where you interact with the surprise that the towers posess. I did have to use the flashlight a little more than I would have liked, but overall I thought that the SP was very well-produced. I played it on the hardest skill level so I didn't really have any complaints about the AI as it was more than enough to keep me from walking through the game.

Multiplayer is ok with me, it could use better maps though. Still that Quake3Arena CTF space level (the very end of you?) is TONS of fun.

The part that I find the most annoying so far is the constant level loads. I would have thought that Raven would have learned how to make the levels more expansive than they are.

Yea i keep thinking about doom 3 when im playing it. Dont think ive played two games utilising practically the same engine before. Hell, the baddies even dissapear for no good reason still.

I would have also gotten FEAR if i had a beast of a PC, but i dont so i didnt buy it. It can wait until i get a new rig whenever thatll be.

I like Quake4 more than FEAR, I think that is the most over rated game of the year easily. I don't really love either, but FEAR is not good.
