What do you think of the people that put A1 on a $40 steak?

Why is the A1 guy frowned upon, while the kosher salt/cracked peppercorn guy respected for that topping on a $40 steak?

I say to each his own. If someone enjoys a $40 steak better with A1, or even ketchup, why should I care? Personally, I think a good steak is good on its own.

For me, a nice cut of marbled, grain fed steak has a flavour that's enchanced by a little bit of salt/pepper rub pre grilling. A1 is very tangy and might overpower the steak's flavour, but if you like it that way more power to you.

I personally think its a waste of money, but its their money, so whatever. But it pretty much comes down to a $40 steak with A1 on it is going to be overpowered and indistinguishable from a lesser cut. Might as well save a few bucks if you like A1 on it.

A $40 steak is something I can rarely get myself to spend on, so when I do, please hold the sauces

I'd say that a $40 steak is joke to begin with.

I can go to the butcher and get myself a 24 oz porterhouse for under $20 and grill it better than just about any restaurant.

The point of the thread is about ruining a good steak with A1 sauce. The $40 reference was to emphasize the good steak. Why is everyone commenting on the price.

That being said, my favorite steak is the 6oz Dallas Filet at Texas Roadhouse for $14.99, and it comes with 2 sides. Great steak! Especially for the price. And no, I don't put anything on it.

I don't really care, but my grandfather taught me that A1 was against the rules. It's pretty much a man law, don't put steak sauce on a decent cut of steak.

Well, a steak is ruined once it's cooked past medium. Then it's too dry and abscent of flavorful juices. At that point I'm grabbing the steak sauce to help moisturize the chunk of rubber sitting in front of me.

Just to clarify, if a dude buys a yellow vw bug, I think it's weird and unmanly, but am not going to hold that against him. That's the same way I feel about A1/ketchup on anything that warrants the term "steak" (as opposed to roasts, meatloafs etc.) and is not immediately followed by "sandwich." It's kind of weird and unmanly, but I'm not going to be a snob about it and hold it against you. It's your money, and you have every right to look ridiculous if you want to.
