I think if he paid $40 for a steak he can deficate on it if that is what he chooses. It is none of my business or yours.

im generally against it, but don't mind if the person tries the steak without a1 first. then decides they want it.
i find it annoying when the first thing people do is put a1 on the steak without trying it without.

if youre using A1, you probably cant tell the difference between a 14 dollar piece of meat and 40 dollar one. Thats why its frowned upon. A little bit of pepper does barely anything to the taste, compared to A1.

I once saw someone serve asparagus with hollandaise. I nearly fainted.

If someone tried doing that at MY table, I'd grab the bottle out of their hands and make them try the steak first! Odds are that they've never had a good steak before if they're doing something crazy like that!

I'd say, If you have to ruin a perfectly good steak by drowning it in sauce, at least use HP sauce.

if a person is using A1 why bother with a really nice steak?

that being said, one of the tastiest steaks I've ever had was at Cheesecake Factory. Sunday Brunch, steak and eggs. I think it was like 15 or 17 bucks.

It was juicier, tastier, and better cooked than steaks I've paid $40+ for. So tender you could cut it with a fork.

A1 on a $14 dollar steak: perfectly acceptable
A1 on a $40 dollar steak: please continue buying $14 steaks, A1 doesn't belong on any cut of steak worth more than $25

My grandfather always talked about a place in San Antonio back in the 30's, when he was in the army, whose owner would take your steak away if you asked for sauce. Gandpa considered this very wise & would always respond to a server's offering of A-1 by saying, "If this steak needs sauce, then I don't want it."

I have had steaks at Mortons, Capital Grille, Ruth's Chris, Palm, and many others. It comes down to, do what ever the hell you want to make your steak good for you. There is no right or wrong way to eat your own food. Anybody who tells you that is just an idiot.

if you paid $40 for a steak and you need A1 - a) the restaurant sucks; b) you suck; c) you just got robbed!

I want to know when it became "cool" to only eat rare meat... That's just asinine.

well considering having a $10 steak with A1 tastes the same as a $40 steak with A1, I'd say it's a waste.

exactly! so why the kosher salt/cracked peppercorn guy more respected for that topping?

because salt is not a topping. it enhances the NATURAL flavor of the steak. A1 covers up the flavor of the steak as to drown out poor steaks with bad/weak natural flavor.

btw, steaks should be cooked with a little salt and pepper on them, not added afterwards. thats a topping, and is oversalting and pointless
