What do you think the "right to bear arms" means?

Do you think it means:

a. The right to have guns the functional equivalent to what was around when they wrote the constitution, i.e. some flintlock musket or its equivalent; or

b. The right to have assault rifles that were developed many, many years after the constitution was written and that can mow down scores of people in only a few seconds?

What say you?

I think you need some other options besides the one you're trying to steer people towards. Your desire is too transparent.

I'll pose a question to you. Do you think the amendments that constitute the Bill of Rights were written for the moment or for the ages?

Additionally, could you list the assault rifles that our citizens are allowed to own under the Second Amendment? Oh, and please, only list only those that match the legal definition of assault rifle.

Well it was all in regards to a well regulated militia... then certain individuals decided to change what that meant. Using modern interpretation it would be B. Using an older interpretation it would be B if part of the militia.

It was for state of the art weaponry, and it's still for state of the art weaponry.

if you think "a" then you also must accept that the 1st amendment protects only those forms of speech around at the time (so no protection for internet, tv, radio, etc.), the 4th amendment only protects those forms of searches available at the time, etc.

Hey now, let's not bring in some kind of logic in this.

It means an insurgency is a bitch to fight shall the the government try any funny business. However, our rights are being chipped away slowly. Like death from a thousand paper cuts. One day your kids', kids', kids' will look at this day and ask, " You really had a 1st Amendment and a 2nd to carry a firearm? That must have been wicked sick!"

I shune to think what life is going to look like when I'm 60 or 70 years old. Better wake up.

I'm pretty sure they meant all weapons. I doubt they though about weapons like we have to day being possible. The whole point of the second amendment was to prevent the government from overpowering its citizens. (if citizens can't form their own militia to fight the government, freedom can be taken away if the government becomes corrupt)

Are there are plenty of examples in history to prove just that.

If I can't purchase a fully functional abrams tank, then my rights are being infringed.

I don't give a shit what our founders believed; societies change.

I think our current laws are generally ok.
Although I wouldn't be butt hurt if the democratically elected officials decided to add some more restriction.
It will be quite a long time until they completely take away personal protection firearms, which is all I care about.
