What does a blind person "see?"

I was wondering this. Would it be what seeing people consider a bright white? Would it be total darkness? Perhaps just an extreme blur? I know that there are different kinds of blindness but wonder what your average blind person experiences. Anyone on ATOT know any blind people who previously had sight and could describe what they "see?"

Has there ever been a scientific study to see if their brain's visual area ever gets stimulated? Maybe their other senses start to take over that part so they can "visualize" their surroundings.

I have always been interested in this as well...

If you go blind/llegally blind although you were born with sight, then you see a blur
If you were born blind, you see darkness

Oh yeah.....the old Helen Keller thing. Forgot about that!!

I do know that my sister told me that when she got her cataract surgery a couple years ago (Rhumatoid Arthritis medications caused it over a period of 20 years, a common side effect), that when they basically vacuumed out her lens material (along with the cataract), she could still see light & shadow, but there was no focus, until they dropped in the new plastic lens. Now she has fixed focus on both eyes.

Blind people have some of the best hearing around; it's just natural to rely on another sense when one is not responding or missing altogether.
