Apart from new maps as thats a given and a different campaign as nobody really cares about that in CoD games anymore. What else is different?
Black ops is newer.
When I try talking to my 16 year old son about playing different games, one of the first questions he ask "how old is the game?" In his opinion, if its more then 2 or 3 years old - then its an "old" game and does not deserve to be played.
I bought my son the ID software package in 2009 for Christmas. The majority of the games he will not install or even try to play because their "old games." When I try to tell my son about Quake 2, or Return to Castle Wolfenstein, he just says those games are "so old!!!!!!!!!"
With todays instant gratification generation, if its not brand new, then its old and not worth anything. Like the new apple ipod touch, even though my kids have an ipod, the ipod touch was new that they had to have it for christmas.
So even though MW2 might be just as good as Black Ops, its old.
You need to beat your son for not appreciating the classics.

I wish I could find regular places that play Doom 2, Quake 2/3 etc online still. I'd play those games any day over this new stuff.
part of the problem with "old" games is simply finding people to play with. unless it's a fairly popular game, online play will be fairly sparse after 2-3 years. now, that may not be the exact reason your son doesn't want to play old games (could be graphics, maybe he just wants the shiniest new thing) but it can be a valid one.
COD is a franchise like Madden. You add a few superficial tweaks each year and use the same tired engine and get the customers money. Sad but smart business practices.
