going to university next year, and my marks are to be submitted this week. my average is pretty much borderline. i think it's right at the cut-off for the program i want to get into. anyways, i talked to my physics teacher to see if he could boost my mark in the course by 2%...i stressed that it would really help a lot and it means the difference between getting in and not getting in (it's the truth ). so he thought about it and said he'd see what he could do, but then said "i'm not in the business of bursting bubbles."

what does that mean? is that good or bad?

thx in advance

telling the truth straight out would be highly deflationary to the person concerned!

In other words, don't get your hopes up. He doesn't want you to get excited then get let down.

It means to slap someone in the face with reality; to dissappoint them. An example: "Man, my GF would NEVER cheat on me! She's devoted." *I say* "I hate to burst your bubble, dude, but I slept w/your GF last night." That's an example.

interesting. given the context I'd think he was saying he'd try to come up with something so you could 'earn' an extra 2%. If he burst your bubble, i'd take that as meaning he couldn't do anything for you - but since he's 'not in that business'...

to burst ones bubble means to undercut someones expectation so as to 'deflate' their hopes. good luck.

I agree.....in fact I do *upgrade * the marks of borderline students at times....

i really hope so

these marks are mid-term marks. so i hope he realizes that he can bump me now, and subtract the marks later. he's a physics teacher, and i'm applying for a physics related program, so hopefully he'll have some sympathy

I'd suggest following up with him if you don't hear back, before it gets too late, in case he had something other than helping you in mind.

But I'd be surprised if he didn't help out because I've always had teachers at the least willing to create an extra credit project for something like this.

he probably is referring to the fact that you were insisting that this one grade could make/break getting into school
he obviously has a difference of opinion

maybe, but it's the truth. this one mark is what will bring down my overall average.
