Yes, that's an option. Just keep in mind that it has a somewhat lower chance of success, since Windows doesn't get to blow away every last thing.

I'm also concerned with breaking the system, so it can't be recovered without losing the data.

There's a reason there's a problem from the first install, who knows what a re-install will encounter? It could make it worse.

I hate to be harsh, but ... if you don't think that you can handle backing up your data, and re-installing Win10 (*), then perhaps you should take it to a shop? Last I knew, you were even fearful of cleaning your PC.

I give you credit for building this one yourself. Think of back-up and re-install as a challenge.

This is a question about OS services for updates and upgrades.

You are running into two issues:

1. You are at the end of the period within which you can defer the anniversary update. You can turn off Windows Update, but that will only work around the problem, and prevent you from getting security, which you do want, as you are running Microsoft's latest OS. And
2. Your hardware issues will prevent this update from installing correctly until the problem is corrected.

My advice (I know you didn't ask for it) would be take it somewhere, or see if you can send it to a notable member here who would be willing to fix it.

I didn't know about a period for deferring the anniversary update, because it repeatedly tries to install it already. Sometimes multiple times a day; other days not at all. This morning and last night it took over the PC for a 'schedule the update' demand though I could close the window.

I just haven't been able to find a 'repair' option yet. The local repair store I contacted that advertises they can repair things others can't said they won't touch a bent CPU socket pin repair.

Yeah. How old is the board now? You could send it back on an rma. At least maybe they can get you a deal in a fix/replacement.

Almost 2 years purchased, 6 months since opened. I'm wondering the services idea would be useful in the meantime, since it's not going to apply the update anyway.

The reason you're not getting more help, Craig, is because it's basically akin to someone that's having trouble booting Windows, and they've overclocked their rig, and they refuse to set it back to stock, instead, choosing to blame Windows. That's what you're doing.

Once you obtain some working hardware, I think that people will be more willing to troubleshoot. Until then, I don't have much sympathy.

Ok, sorry I'm an ass at times. Just, this thread seems a bit drawn-out, and you seem to be a bit hard-headed, or just fearful of making things worse. PM me, and send me some paypal to cover shipping, and I'll send you a "care package", with a CPU and mobo and a drive. Then you can do a fresh, stable, install of Windows, and then slave your old drive to it to copy stuff off of. (Maybe some RAM too, if I have any appropriate kits spare at the time. Stuff is kinda pricy.)

You'll have to figure out how to get it all installed though. Whether you take it to a shop or not, is up to you.

You get your choice of a Biostar H81 board, and a G3258 Haswell Pentium CPU (unlocked, for overclocking, if you flash the mainboard BIOS back to it's first official release), or a Biostar B150 "Hifi" board, and a (slightly used, but in retail box with cooler) Skylake Pentium G4400. We can work out if you need some RAM too. I think that I have an AMD A4-6300 dual-core APU @ 3.9Ghz stock, and an MSI FM2+ micro-ATX board too, in case you wanted to experiment with an APU. That would be a bit of a downgrade, relative to your current box, though.

i use only mobile internet so my copy of windows 10 is always on a pause until i get enough money for an update

i also have a copy of windows xp which is mega light on bandwidth useage and use opera 36 with that for mega fast display.
