Family? Girlfriend? Desire to live a luxurious life in return for all the hard work? Hope of a scientific/engineering breakthrough? Betterment of humanity? The need to get rid of world hunger? World peace?

What drives you?

Me.

I know, smart @ss answer. The truth is, I've always believed that driven individuals tend to be selfish...in a good way. The things you mentioned are all things that motivate us, but only because we as individuals get something out of them. So in a way, it's still your own needs, wants and desires that drive you. Nothing wrong with that, just my opinions.

Interesting. I meant more along the lines of say a person who's driving force is the "betterment of humanity" like getting rid of AIDS in Africa and a person who just wishes for a better life for himself (more money, bigger house).

From your logic, the former is doing something for others as well as getting something out of it for himself, as you say, whatever that may be. But the latter is doing it for himself and himself alone.

i work really hard at a mundane job to know that it will help finance going to hawaii every year, going on cruises, exlporing new places and things with the person i love.

That is our passion. We work hard for what we have.

I guess that is selfish, but , well, you asked.

Sorry, didn't read it that way.

Still, I think in any endeavor whether just personal gain or more altruistic, there needs to be some personal satisfaction involved. I'm sure there are plenty of people of means that don't feel the need to help others - so they don't. Yet we all know people who have little but are always helping others.

If helping others drives me, then obviously I get something out of it to want to do it. So whether I'm helping others or myself, that selfish element comes into play.

When I commuted for 3yrs I never saw anyone help old people's bags upstairs. I often did that, when I saw old people with bags and suitcases.

So what you are saying is that no matter what a person does, there's always something in it for him even if it doesn't provide any tangible benefit to him, i.e. monetary return/material gain? These are the two things that are generally associated with a "return" or a "reward" ... money or some material substance. Every tangible benefit could in some way be related with these two. "Satisfaction" and other rewarding feelings and emotions would then not fall under either of these two categories and cannot be associated with a return as we perceive it to be. Hence the person is selfless and doing it solely for who he claims he is doing it for.

My brain hurts.

Right this second: the desire to graduate from college
Near future: to move to a larger city and find a job
Future: to have a couple of kids and a cute dog and just enough money to be comfortable and drive a hybrid

Aspirations: to work in the field of international aid because I didn't deserve all that I got and someone smarter, better, more ethical should have gotten it.

Maybe also to move out of the U.S. but that's not a must!!!

Two years ago my best friend got a girl friend and forgot about all his friends, he dropped out of school and screwed me on $2000. As long as I finish school and get a better job than him that makes more money, Ill be happy....So I guess its rage that drives me

That's a good question. Short answer, I want a complete education, a job, and the ability to support myself. In the longer run, I hope to be remembered as someone who had an inpact on my field, and ideally as a person who helped my community/city/state/world at least as much as any "normal" person can. Along the way, a family would be great too.

But I also believe life must be worth it minute by minute and day by day. Why work 100 hr/week for 20 years just so you can vacation in Europe?

If you like Europe that much, MOVE THERE and teach English for a year or two! LOL.
