I'll have to agree with mr bojangles here...
The only reason mobo's still come with the old PS2 ports is because too many people either have old keyboards/mice that they continue to use, or they get the cheap PS2 keyboards and mice with their new (CHEAP!) computers. Just like how the mobo's STILL have a parallel port even though every new printer (and those produced over the past few years) have been USB. If people would refresh their aged technology a bit faster, then those ports would be gone from systems. As they should be.
As much as many windows users love to bash Apple, at least they took a stand with standards when it comes to many things. Some of those having to do with ports. A while back (around 2000) they ditched the old adb port (used for keyboards and mice once upon a time) and the floppy drive. They fully embraced USB (1.1 at the time) and FireWire ports. While pc companies were using the slower USB ports on their systems, Apple jumped onto it at full port speed (at the time 12Mbps). They also made standard the 6 pin connection for FireWire (or ieee1394a). You can STILL find laptops that only have the 4 pin port. That means you have to connect FireWire drives and such to a power source in order to use them. The 6 pin connection/cable carries power on the two spare pins/wires. Apple was involved in the development of FireWire (ieee1394a and b) but it's not theirs alone. That's why you find it on other systems. While they did coin the term 'FireWire' and might have even copywrited it, it's become a recognized term for that connection type.
What did that have to do with this thread?? Not 100% sure, but it does point out how one company can take a stand, drop old techologies down the crapper and survive. If computer makers would do the same, on the pc/windows side, then the world would be a better place. Hell, they could probably even drop the old serial ports from systems and either add more USB connections, another ethernet port, or make 6 pin ieee1394a (and/or b) standard on all pc's.
