What ever happened to the 980x cpu 6 core ?

When this came out few years back seems like I was like wow 6 core 12 threads.

I was then expecting even more like a 8 core 16 thread.

Intel hasn't delivered when it comes to desktop Cores, Some need 8 core for like me who has DAW , or people with video editing........

It is a nice chip that happens to gobble down the power.

And its on a ~3 year old platform.

The 3930/3960 fills that role now.

You can buy an Octocore Xeon for S2011 if you so desire. Just bring your ~$2k along if you want some clock speed to go with it.

Professionals in those fields have the cash should they "ever" need dual xeons.

There's no reason to release a single 8 core. It also probably won't clock as high, so not even the overclockers would buy it.

Plenty of options available right now, actually.

No ocing, though. So if you can get a 3930 to ~4.1 Ghz you can get the same throughput for a lot less than the EP costs, and 4.1 should be doable. Now, if you really need the threads/cache/ECC support, that is different story.

Honestly, I don't think that EP is that *bad* of a value. At least its there as an option.

If you are talking 8 cores on a Mac then you mean the Mac Pro which comes with up to 12 cores. But that is a dual socket Xeon. It is two quad core on the previous generation to get 8 total or dual 6 core for 12 total on the current generation.

The fact that it's a Mac is not really relevant - it's still a dual socket system and the max cores per socket is still 6.
