I've never met or even encountered a native american indian at work, school or any other place. I live in Chicago which is a fairly large city so it really surpises me that I have never met a native american indian.

A great deal of them live in the southwest US, centered around the reservations. I would imagine there are quite a few in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, as well.

As stated, many of them are on reservations. Some of them integrated into society, but when you have mixed marriages their physical features and culture tend to fade over time. The main reason is that the early westward settlers wiped out so many that there aren't that many left to count.

sticking to the reservations instead of trying to integrate has held them back.

There are a lot around here, in the Pacific Northwest. I would say mostly in Washington.

Some of you people speak about Indian Reservations like they're something normal.

What we did to the Native Americans was sick. There is no denying that.

The "we" who did it have been dead and buried for a long time. Why should we feel guilt about the past when we had nothing to do with it? We should be mindful of it always, and not repeat the mistakes of the past, but in no way should we feel guilty.

Should "you" feel guilty about the way "you" treated my Irish immigrant ancestors who came here in the late 1800s?

I see your point, but I still feel bad.. Just as we feel bad for what happened to the Jews. It was our very own holocaust.

It's okay, they got the last laugh by originating the use of tobacco products. So if you feel guilty about killing them all you should slug them in the face every time you see one for committing mass muder

We shouldn't feel guilty, but maybe we should welcome them back into society as they are. I find it funny that we are a melting pot nation, but the one race that was here before ours, that our ancestors didnt agree with, were nearly exterminated. And our constitution says all men are created equal. Funny how that doesn't apply to Native Americans, eh?

edited: took out "we" since people are sensitive tonight

It really is horrible. I mean.. that's what makes me think that just about everything America stands for is a pile of crap.. We're no better than anybody else, we commit the same crimes we say we try and stop... It's a joke, lol

Edit: I mean, the things that we say we stand for are of course good things.. But, well.. you know what I mean.. lol

I'm right here, I'll let you come look at me for $50, if you want.

There were lots of Chippewa where I grew up (Michigan).

There's a decent size Indian population in one area of Oakland. My buddy in Phoenix has a reservation right next to where he lives.

There's a few thousand across the river from here. I live by a large Indian reservation (Colville) so that isn't too surprising.

I'm 1/4 Cherokee . When I lived in Oklahoma there were a lot of them. I knew a bunch that were just normal people, they didn't live on a reservation or dress up any different than anyone else. We were just friends with them. I'm not sure how it is will all of you up North though .

22% of the population here, IIRC.

they say if the birth & death rates stay the same, and people move at the same rate, by 2050 whites will be a minority here.. (i remember hearing that somewhere.. forget where.)

There are a lot of reservations up here in Washington state, USA. I've grew up with them around here, and learned a lot about them in school and on my own.

There is something to be gained in empathy for the way they were mistreated - however, their plight today is a cultural clash - they were raised in a culture that valued human life as a place in nature. European settlers (mostly Christians) generally held to a belief that man was the highest rung in the evolutionary ladder - man was meant to 'rule the earth'. When the former is immersed in the latter... well, it's not fun.
