There are a lot around here, in the Pacific Northwest. I would say mostly in Washington. Some of you people speak about Indian Reservations like they're something normal. What we did to the Native Americans was sick. There is no denying that.
do they still speak thier native languages?
Y'know, there was something on NPR a few months back (Fresh Air, I think is what it aired on) regarding some of the languages. Basically, it said that their language was slowly dying off thanks to the modern world. How do you translate
computer or
internet? The tribal council that they were focusing on for the article actually did agree to a set of words for computer, but it took like 45 seconds to say it was so long.
It also referenced how the only people who still speak the native tongue were the elder generation (obviously) and how they were attempting to gain some interest in the tongue in the younger generations by offering classes in elementary school, etc.
As an American, I feel ashamed of what the country's ancestors did to them. However, I don't personally feel ashamed, since I didn't do it and my ancestors were still either across the ocean or south of the border.
On a lighter note, my grandfather was driving through Oklahoma a few years back and stopped at a convention of some sorts run by some natives that offered him free admission and a free dinner for him and my grandmother. He actually is half/quarter (something) indian in his mexican blood. I just thought it was funny.
