Most indians that died, were killed because of European diseases...smallpox, etc. The rest were asked (with guns) to move west.

Some places got hit harder than others. I mean, jeez, close your eyes and think about what a Jamaican or Haitian person looks like. Not too Indian, eh?

Some of you people speak about Indian Reservations like they're something normal.

What we did to the Native Americans was sick. There is no denying that.

The "we" who did it have been dead and buried for a long time. Why should we feel guilt about the past when we had nothing to do with it? We should be mindful of it always, and not repeat the mistakes of the past, but in no way should we feel guilty.

Should "you" feel guilty about the way "you" treated my Irish immigrant ancestors who came here in the late 1800s?

that is exactly right - and I hope some may remember these words the next time in one of those political threads when they are out of arguments and turn to giving me sh1t because of WWII and the nazi sickasssh1t

Round these parts, there's a group of Rumsey Indians who run the Cache Creek Casino, located about 30 minutes from Davis, CA. Anyway, all 41 of them receive the winnings from the casino and the place rakes in dough like water in a rainstorm. According to this article dated March 2000, they make take-free over 10 million.. between the 41 of them. I'm having a feeling that these guys aren't suffering too much and there's a reason they're out there.

The second article states that they want to build a parking structure for almost 5000 cars! I went there when I was a freshman at UC Davis and that place, although it's out in the middle of nowhere, is pretty darn packed as it is, given it's a casino... I couldn't imagine 5000 cars on the 2 lane road that leads there.

The third article states that there are 46 members now and "The group founded the casino in 1985 as a bingo parlor, and added more games over the years. The casino has grown to 114,000 square feet and was taking in more than $30 million a year before its expansion in 1998. A major economic force in the county, it employs about 1,100. "

Well, yeah, but some survived and Native Americans for the most part have gotten over it. Reservations still suck though. Unfortunately their culture and that of the rest of America is pretty much incompatible.

do they still speak thier native languages?

Y'know, there was something on NPR a few months back (Fresh Air, I think is what it aired on) regarding some of the languages. Basically, it said that their language was slowly dying off thanks to the modern world. How do you translate computer or internet? The tribal council that they were focusing on for the article actually did agree to a set of words for computer, but it took like 45 seconds to say it was so long.

It also referenced how the only people who still speak the native tongue were the elder generation (obviously) and how they were attempting to gain some interest in the tongue in the younger generations by offering classes in elementary school, etc.

As an American, I feel ashamed of what the country's ancestors did to them. However, I don't personally feel ashamed, since I didn't do it and my ancestors were still either across the ocean or south of the border.

On a lighter note, my grandfather was driving through Oklahoma a few years back and stopped at a convention of some sorts run by some natives that offered him free admission and a free dinner for him and my grandmother. He actually is half/quarter (something) indian in his mexican blood. I just thought it was funny.

Spac3d,
Tis ok. I'm not offended. Common term which was not meant as a slur. Mistaken geography, thats all. Spose there could be some from India who are offended to be associated with Native Americans though.

Take your political correct "white guilt" BS somewhere else. Most tribal councils have long adopted the term 'indian' in some inflection, usually American Indian or Native American Indian. Some like the Seminole and Chippewa just use plain old "Seminole Indian" or "Chippewa Indian". That means the vast majority of Indians refer to and think of themselves as Indians, asswipe.

Go pretend to be an advocate for some other suckers who need more idiots attempting to speak on their behalf.

Yeah, but the Irish have assimilated into society well now, whereas the Native Americans are still suffering. i heard they have the highest suicide and alcohol abuse rate. I hear they also have the highest H.S. dropout rate. If the Irish were suffering today, due to what has happened to them in the past, then we should feel bad for them too. I think more still needs to be done for them. The casino millionaires probably make up a tiny portion of the actual population.

What happened to them? Probably assimilated, mixed with others, or you have seen some but mistaken them for hispanics.
