What exactly does "degaussing" the monitor do?

I never really cared at first what this option did, but now i do

I have no idea. But it might have to do with making the monitor less blurry, seeing as "Gaussian Blur" is a filter in photoshop

I think it has something to do with clearing the magnetic fields around the monitor.

That's what i had thought. How often should i degauss my monitor? It sits in reletive close proximity to my speakers......

i thought it had to do with setting up your monitor for your location... ie where you are in the world effects the monitor... the magnetic pull of the poles etc... but anyways that is besides the point...
you should not degauss your monitor unless there is some sort of distortion... degaussing too often can kill a monitor...i've seen it... i would only degauss if there is distortion other than that just leave it...

Yes, you should only degauss your monitor if the screen is distorted, which happens when there is too much magnetic intereference around your monitor. I think i heard tha degaussing is ok for your monitor, but you shouldnt do it repeatedly within a certain time period
