It's tempting to get into mining just for the heat. Yeah heating with electricity is more expensive than natural gas, but if I'm making money with crunching then it works out nicely. Once I'm done my basement project and paid off my credit line I might seriously start to look into it. I'll start small, see if I can make a bit of money then increase the size from there.

Lucky. The cooling might be what kills the project for me.

I wonder if I can run a mining rig using 100F outside air for cooling.....

you've been pissing all over crypto on here for as long as i can remember, and yet it just keeps growing and growing and gaining popularity and market share and value. when are you going to recognize that you just might be wrong?

Ouch did the conversion and that comes up to 37C. Yeah, probably not. Mind you I have seen cell sites hit over 50C. Bad for the equipment, but it will run. I'd hate to be the guy going in that building to fix the AC. Pretty much pry the door open, setup some fans and GTFO to go get ice cream and wait till it cools off a bit. :awe:

But yeah in my house heat is not an issue. It's 14C in my server room right now. Though, that's a little low, want to keep it around 20. I don't have any climate control in there right now though, it's not really a "room" yet.

Where can you buy these things? Legitimately.

A currency exchange, like btc-e.com. Fund your account with some dollars, and buy Litecoin with it.

Just keep in mind that getting your money back out might be painful, thanks to the transaction fees and general hassle with dealing transferring money overseas.

I'm pissing on it because I have moral values. Sure I would love to make a quick buck and had I known before hand how ridiculously stupid it was to make money....maybe I would have went on board.

I wish the government would have nipped this in the bud a long fucking time ago, but they either #1 have skin in the game or #2 are a bunch of pussies.

The whole basis of it is obtaining credits for doing absolutely.no.effort.

Computing fake algorithms to randomly obtain a fixed amount of "coins"....yeah explain to me how this creates a legitimate source for currency.

I think....at one point it made sense...if you wanted to buy drugs or sex....because there were very very few ways to do that completely anonymously. Using cash to do these things is not valued because you have to do it in person and it may possibly be dangerous.

Also..the market value also is meaningless because it's in it's own imaginary market. A bitcoin is like a baseball card...unique and only so many. A baseball card may be worth $1000 USD, that DOES NOT mean a baseball card has more "intrinsic value" then real currency.

But at some point, you know what happens? The maker of the baseball cards gets greedy and then starts flooding the market with more cards, making the value of each card drop tremendously.

Everyone wants to make the quick buck...and if you can do it, good job and good for you.

Unfortunately, everyone else is a bunch of idiot lemmings and they are the ones who are going to get fucked in the ass...then people like me who have actual moral values will have to pay for their bailout social programs.

I have a few friends with boxes filled with what were once valuable and rare baseball cards. They are now not even worth the energy which would be produced if you burn them.

Go ahead, make a quick buck, but you are lying to yourself if you think this will last as it currently exists.

What's morality got to do with it?

Yea, because what we need is more government control in our lives. I wish my cash purchases could be tracked as easily as my electronic ones, and I welcome my benevolent overlord's oversight of all my purchases.

It takes a tremendous amount of work to create bitcoins, and that's what keeps fraud out of the production/spending. Because they aren't found by people swinging pick axes, it doesn't mean it takes no work. You could say building roads doesn't take work, since it's the machines doing the heavy lifting.

Ohh poor baby mizzou, did you miss out on potential bitcoin riches and now you are all pissed off about it. Boo hoo hoo

Seriously, you have nothing useful to contribute to this conversation.

I really don't see a Moral issue with Bitcoin and derivatives of it. There is a high risk to it, but that's another issue entirely.

I'm kinda sad I didn't mine back when I learn about it in 08. Was considering FPGA mining in 2010 but didn't.

Now I actually have to work a bit harder and challenge myself more. That's what God wants for me to do at this point anyways, so it's all good.

Litecoins differ from Bitcoins in that they cannot be mined with specialized chips like bitcoins. Right now you can only use CPU's and GPU's for litecoin mining. Any 5000 series or newer AMD cards do a good job. My 7970 mining for around 8 hours a day produced 0.95 litecoins in 5 days which is about $30.

ASICs secure the network from attack. It's good to know that all who invested in 1st gen ASICs are in the positive.

I am going to install 6+TH/s after Christmas. Already got a site.

It's amazing to see how currently 1 TH/s makes ~1BC/day. A year ago to make 1BC/day you only needed 4GH/s.

Then again, hindsight is 20/20.

Cooling depends on your system. You can cool with 100 degree air, but it may shorten the life of your server. You can get creative though and cool only the intake air like we do in datacenters (hot aisle/ cold aisle)

Research data center cooling but calculations to figure out what the wattage to heat would be for your particular system. You may need some software to read power consumption when grinding.

They can't be mined with current specialized hardware.
GPUs are pretty well designed for litecoins though, cpus are pretty much obsolete already.

The first litecoin asics are supposed to hit in a month or two. The algorithm is more memory intensive than bitcoin, but not so much so that you can't just put a memory bus on the ASIC. Heck, the silicon budget might be high enough now that you could put enough memory on chip, how much space would it take for TSMC to put 1GB of ram on die?

The under lying algorithm that litecoin uses (scrypt) can be tuned to make it so memory intensive that it would be infeasible for a GPU or ASIC to do it...but then few PCs could do it either. Right now, the algorithm fits with the cache of a cpu or GPU, but it can be tuned so it doesn't.

Oh really, didn't hear about ASICs for litecoin before. Thats interesting!

That would be equivalent to computer intake coming from inside my house but outputting outside? Seems expensive to vent cold air outside.

If the machine new it's power consumption how it would it change it's behavior? I'm guessing you have diminishing returns of increasing processing power and generating greater and greater heat, so it makes sense to throttle processing at some point?
