My Thinkpad was getting laggy so checked Task Manager. 95% RAM consumed out of 32GB. Firefox was at the top. Opened Firefox's Task Manager. One tab each from Techspot and Tomshardware was consuming 2GB all by themselves. Killed 'em both. Now RAM is at 84%. I guess it'll do for a while.

I have a mid-level manager who is smart, nice, and grossly inexperienced for the position he obtained. He keeps promising clients timelines and outcomes that will never be realized. The timelines he promises ignore working with regulators who have mandated processes and schedules. Even if our work was instant, we couldn't keep to the timelines he offers. He also tends to view regulation as arbitrary and waivable if we just explain to the regulators what the client proposes in just the right way. The regulators are usually implementing black letter law with no discretion so his approach is wasting everyone's time. Hopefully, we can speed up the learning curve for him.

Windows 11 is the stupidest OS ever, breaking our notions of what we have come to expect as normal behavior from a laptop/PC. When a laptop's lid is closed, it is supposed to sleep, yes? I just heard the Windows login chime from my closed HP laptop with Windows 11 on it. It probably applied an update on a sleeping laptop! FFS Microsoft! Let sleeping laptops lie!!!!

My boss's boss (department head) is either incapable or unwilling to make a decision on whether to send me on a work trip.

I was invited by colleagues in a different department. I don't care if I go or not (it would be great). But I do need to know one way or the other so I can book a flight and hotel. The trip is next Monday.

It was like pulling teeth to get approval for a different trip that the same department head suggested I go on (industry expo). Like, this was your idea, so why is it so hard to make a go/no-go call???

Suffice to say, my confidence in this particular department head has plummeted.

Well, back in they day.....they'd effing be hungry. Not questioning your parenting style cause there's 100 things that I said I'd never do and then did...and the opposite. Shit, prolly 500.
I was so swole after working out that it was hard to reach my back in the shower. View attachment 95571
Was it the same before you worked out?

I would totally let them starve. Wife, not into that. And I hate the high pitch yelling...

I got these JBL noise cancelling ear buds....

Boy was 2.5 and I got tired of dealing with the pappy. Tossed that out the window riding down the road. Shit hit the fan. Left him standing in the drive for 30min...Go back there....eff that. Yes, Mom was away. For weeks, he'd give other kids the pappy death stare.

I think I mentioned here before how the old cad monkey would send me coordinates. He'd print out a coordinate list, scan it to pdf, then send me a pdf attachment to email. A simple ascii file that started life digitally, got converted to analog, then converted back to digital in an oversized, less convenient form :^D

No bitch and moan thread or 3rd world one so....biking down the fastest hill on my ride, 35mph at the bottom. Also, a cross street at the bottom. 3 houses from that, car pulls out in front of me. I don't mind as long as the driver can find their gas pedal cause then I can draft. This car halfway did but I was on their ass at 20+. I'd be effed (Darwin missed out, ATOT) if they'd brake checked me. Then they effing spray me with washer fluid....Someone's G-Ma learned a lot of new words. After the fact, I think she was just old and didn't know I was there. Anyway, we hit a curve and there's a postal truck. She stops and I pass her on the left on a double yellow.

How's that for a imperiled cyclist and an entitled biker?

Reminds me of when I worked in tech support. If I would ask for a screenshot of an error or something and it seems people tried to find the most bizarre way to send them. My favourite is when they would print it, and then do a "scan 2 email" of the print out. All those extra steps when they could have just emailed it directly from their PC without even getting up.

To this day, I can't for the life of me understand why people think it's perfectly normal to paste a screenshot in a Word doc file and send that in email. Every single time I have to save that image as a JPG to view it properly. Hard to respect a person when they don't know about Paint. Then there are the absolutely wonderful morons who think it's perfectly normal to attach to email a heavy scanned image megabytes in size due to selecting too large DPI setting. Then they pick up the phone and call me and ask me if I received it. Of course I won't receive it at light speed if you send it that big, you no friend of common sense

Or how I absolutely get delighted when I get a table of data pasted in the body of the email and I actually need to work with that data. I have to copy it, paste it in Word, copy it from there and then paste that in Excel to finally do something with that.

And this just happened last night. Guy calls me and tells me that an employee ID must be registered under some other company so I need to delete it. I search for the ID. No record found. I ask him, what error are you getting? He says no error. I ask him, what do you mean? He says, I click the Save button and nothing happens. Wished I could Force smack him over long distance. Told him to close the browser, open it again and re-login then try again. Didn't get a call from him again meaning that's all he should've done before jumping to a stupid conclusion on his own and wasting my time.

A retirement councilor walked me through the the tax implications of traditional IRAs and required minimum distributions. I bit the bullet and made the switch from contributions to my traditional 401k to a Roth 401k. F'! I'm with Red now on tax policy. I'm only one paycheck in and I want my tax shelter back. Now I get to do some rollovers, double f'.
So I log into my 401 account to see if the Roth switch over stuck. We have the same limited investment options for both the traditional and Roth plans. The financial institution lumps the totals by mutual fund with the Roth and traditional holdings combined. The contributions are tracked separately but I haven’t found a way to get a balance in each account to compare to what I track in Quicken. It’s bizarre.

@igor_kavinski Cause the US ed system sucks for real world crap.
None of the users I deal with are US educated. However, I did meet an American lady in a programming bootcamp. She managed to learn the C programming language in less than 24 days with no prior programming experience and scored 42 in the final exam. I had more than 10 years of tinkering experience in C programming and I got 66. And she said that she's lazy as heck. She's a school teacher by the way.

I just spent ~15 minutes trying to figure out why my compose key wasn't working. Turns out my capslock key died. I have it reassigned to rt ctrl, but I've been using capslock forever, so that's where the muscle memory is. It's also otherwise worthless, so I like using that key. I guess I'll have to take the keyboard apart some time and see if I can fix it.

pretty sure I have never killed a key, let alone something so underused like caps lock. In short, you are doing it wrong.
