I just blew $20 on two new USB 2.0 cables: micro and mini-B. The catch? They're braided. Holy shit, they are so awesome. I don't want to live in a world without braided exterior cable jackets.

Why does it matter?

Nicer to look at, adds some bounce, less kinks, feels better, and it adds, I hope, a barrier between my hands and the lead-laced PVC insulation lining the conductors. Mainly the last one. Paranoid.

Window fan wasn't cutting it in the bedroom because of the humidity, so I had to get up and turn the AC on. I wanted to sleep with the windows open though because it's supposed to rain and I like hearing it.

Except it's just usb 2.0 :awe:

USB 3.0 is years away for me. Don't plan on replacing my system until it breaks -- actually, when the CPU fan fails. Don't want to deal with removing/reapplying thermal paste.

Sounds like you live in the 3rd world then.

It was too nice outside not to cook up the last two steaks I have and I feel I've eaten too much. Grilled corn, kielbasa, steak, and a potato.

Add-in PCI cards are cheap, you'll just need to load drivers for them. Don't think they supported natively.

Thought about that but I don't want to have to find add another power supply cable for the card (modular PSU). And honestly, USB 2.0 is fast enough for me. Only reason I'd want it is to make backing up to my external HDD quicker -- I do that twice a year?

Just use a hdd power splitter or extension. There are normally at least 3 or 4 power connectors on every lead from the PSU. So if you don't have one free, use a splitter and/or extension/adapter.

USB3 is so much faster and adapters are so cheap, there's no reason to be stuck with USB2 speeds. But it really depends on your needs. If you're using it just for the occasional file transfer or if you're using slow flash media, then you're right, you probably don't need it. But if you ever do anything more than that, you'll be happy you upgraded.

Ugh... I understand why people don't take as many vacation days when they've nowhere to go. =( I cannot wait to start my new job. I am so tired of sitting around goofing all day.

I'm annoyed because someone replied to my Craigslist ad saying they wanted to buy my shit...

However, the email they used had all of their business contact info, and they never replied back. People be using Craigslist ads to spam advertise.

Taking a half day to drive up to Manchester, NH for a bachelor party tonight and then Boston tomorrow night. Google Maps shows 4h 20m to 7h long. Will be hitting traffic in: NY, Stamford, Hartford, Worcester, Lowell, ... (?), etc. Need moar coffee. At least I just updated my offline Spotify playlists so that'll keep me somewhat entertained.

Getting price gouged on internet and my only alternative for something better would require a move.

Porting a 30 year old telephone number worth hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. The one thing the new Telco said over and over again was do NOT cancel your number before porting was complete.

So, what does one fucking idiot do? Cancelled the god damn number after I relayed the message multiple times, across a few weeks. I said it would take 6-8 weeks, I said the number couldn't be cancelled until porting was done.

Then the old Telco called when the porting request got to them. Their retentions department tried to win us back with a 25% discount. New VoIP service was a 90% discount, so obviously it was refused. The person answering the phone then proceeded to tell the Telco rep that they wanted the phone cancelled ASAP. So, the Telco rep decided to cancel the service within a few days -- other person accepted.

I can't decide if the scorned Telco rep didn't know this was a number port, didn't know the porting process, didn't give a shit, or just wanted to stick it to a clueless person. My moneys on a bit of cluelessness and vindictiveness. One last, "fuck you for leaving us." Now I have to call Telco to try to unfuck this and hopefully not get extorted.

Calling Telco: 31 minutes on hold and counting. I wonder if being flagged as a former customer has anything to do with it -- had to enter number/account when calling.

On a related topic, I decided to switch carriers a couple of weeks ago, from Virgin to Cricket. The problem was that to port my number, I needed my account information which included my account number. Except Virgin never tells you what your acct number is ANY-fucking-where. You can't even look it up if you login to your account. Nope. You have to call them and try to squeeze it out of one of their phone reps.

Since after an exhaustive search I figured they had to be using this as a choke point for customers that wanted to leave, I made sure I had a good story to tell the phone rep. It was going to be epic. I was applying for a job that required security clearance and one of the things I had to provide was my cell phone acct info. I had a whole story ready to go if they asked me for specifics. It was the Signals Intelligence Directorate and everything they might want to know about was classified.

But when I finally got through to them, I figured out I would start out with something vague like I needed the info for some paperwork and let them then try to get more info. But it seems as long as you say anything other than you want to switch providers, they don't ask you anything else. What a let down. I was so psyched to tell them this long bullshit story.

Oh well.

Yeah. My employer is a cable telecom. Customers often cancel their line before the number can be ported, even though we tell them it has to stay active.
