Prairie Home Companion's on, but it just isn't the same with Chris Thile. I liked Garrison's show much better. I hate change :^(

That's like the only NPR show I didn't like. Ever
It grew on me. I especially liked the News From Lake Wobegon segment. They had a couple years uploaded to soundcloud, and I downloaded all of those, but I'd like to have the rest.

I saw him in Lancaster a couple years ago. The show was kind of cut down compared to the typical radio show, but it was good. I was 15' away from him during the opening monologue, which was pretty cool.

Meh. I just couldn't get into it. I know a couple people that love it though. I listen to NPR on FM here in NJ, and if that show ever came on I'd switch to the NPR's AM station, which usually had something different on.

I've been to a few tapings of Wait Wait Don't Tell Me plus a few MOTH Story Hour Grand Slam events, which are all awesome.

from my browsing experience it's usually companies that are used to making quotes when they receive requests rather than selling stuff like a supermarket.

Yeah that's usually what it is, still annoying. I was looking into 48v rectifier/inverter systems to update my server room's power system and trying to find a site that actually sells that kind of stuff is very hard, all of them want you to get a quote. I found some TDK-Lambda PSUs on Newark Element 14 but even then the selection is kinda low. Ebay works too, they sometimes show up there as pulls from working environments.

I'll probably end up designing my own systems though. Been reading up on and off on SMPS and once I can wrap my head around the math and magnetics it really does not seem that complicated.

Why is windows so awful? I started installing vanilla win7 today before noon, and it's still updating. It must download little microsoft monkeys that carefully place each bit of data on the platter one bit at a time. In contrast, I upgraded my debian install while waiting for files to download, and a complete version upgrade took less than .5 hours.

Side note, it appears AT has installed the windows plugin on the forums to give shit performance to everyone, regardless of platform. Thanks Obama...

^lulz, Windows update. Last time I ran Windows Update, it took 3 hours just to tell me what updates were available. Didn't even start downloading yet... I hadn't updated in about a year.

And FML on insurance. I'm trying to decide between an online insurer and one from a broker. The broker is double the price of the online one, but the online one doesn't have the exact option for what I want -- it has two similar options. Fuq.

Fucking ATOT forums not loading up at all or being terribly slow. Problems.

Seriously. Very very slow right now. Not the first or second time either.

Yeah I don't get how Microsoft manages to make their stuff so slow. Everything Windows does takes forever. And as hardware improves, they just make their stuff slower so that it negates the hardware performance.

Microsoft is ridiculous with all their updates too, omg. I ended up just turning that off on my win7 machine, it seems every time I go to use that machine it wanted to download and install more updates. And reboot.

Then there's win 10 they don't even let you disable the updates or schedule them, it just reboots whenever the hell it wants. I don't know how people and companies put up with that shit. There ARE alternatives, they just need to take the time to switch their stuff over.

I left windows to its own devices at office. I got tired of waiting for it to do something. I like to see a successful result before I leave a computer, but I have to sleep tonight. Can't wait to see what delights windows has in store for me tomorrow :^(

Are you fuqing kidding me? You can't turn off updates with Windows 10? What if I want to shut down in the middle of an update?

I have to listen to people talking about buying toilet paper on sale everyday. You can buy a box of 48 commercial-size rolls for $20 regular price. It lasts like 3 months, also known as $7/month. Why is this even an issue? Meanwhile, these same people pay $300/month in insurance and permits for a car they drive 3 miles to Wal-Mart and won't buy from Wal-mart online even though I've shown them how.

Spoke to God about my constant failure of not winning the lotto. He just simply told me to give to Caesar what is Caesar's. With deep thought I think he means a $5 pizza.

If I ever go 10 I would deploy this and block all of M$'s ASNs. At least for inbound. But of course you don't want telemetry outgoing either.

I heard something to the effect that newer CPUs will only work on windows 10, that is very alarming, that they can actually do that. Though I wonder if it has to do with the backdoors, maybe they actually do depend on the software layer. So if the Linux community manages to get them working (which I'm sure they will) then maybe running Linux will kill the backdoors too. Just a total wild guess though. It's probably just some kind of deal with MS to force people on 10.

Sometimes I wonder if AMD might be a better option for reasons other than performance, but then they probably pull a lot of the same crap too like backdoors.

That's a neat little box. I already run PFsense but it's on a big 1U server that probably sucks a lot of power compared to something that small. I'd have to look into one some time.

With pfsense you can do outbound rules too. So yeah just block their IPs in and out and *should* be good. Of course it won't update AT ALL, so if you want to update you probably have to open it up once in a while, but then all the telemetry crap is probably going to upload all the stuff it has stored too. They might use separate IPs, but if they're smart they probably use all the same ones so people can't pick and choose what they block.

Today's FWP: supose to get 15cm of snow and there's something wrong with my snowblower. I'm hoping it's just the carb needing to be cleaned. I don't have a heated or insulated garage so doing any kind of work on a snow blower at this time of year is not really my idea of fun.

Might buy one of those propane heaters though, I can just direct it towards me while I'm working, it's going to be a waste of energy as that heat is just going to escape the garage but if it's only an occasional thing it's not that bad I suppose.

Either way I'll want to get my snow blower working soon as snow storm season is upon us.

You pretty much need Windows 10 now. I think DirectX 12 only works with that, and its got better SSD support than Windows 7. Also, being two gens behind on OS' isn't great for general knowledge.

Windows 10 has been really good to me on my desktop and laptop. The only issue has been with Adobe Lightroom acting up - only on my desktop, which is a more powerful rig, even though my laptop is an i7 chip.

But bootup times are fast, and everything runs pretty damn well with no crashes. Just fucking Lightroom

Outside of the lack of control, and the spying crap, what really bugs me about 10 is the ugly blocky big UI that you can't really change. There's a few options like the black one, but that's about it. Everything is so big and takes up so much space. Dialogs are too big, window elements are too big. It reminds me of being on a 640x480 monitor. The UI basically negates the real estate gain of being on a higher res monitor. We have it on the church computer and I just find it really annoying to use. I put classic shell so at least the start menu is half decent but the rest of the UI still sucks and is hard on the eyes.

I ended up putting Linux on an older machine which we also use to store speech recordings. I also setup Audacity and such to record right on that machine, so the win10 machine is only really for powerpoint now.
