I've been using an Italian stove top stainless steel espresso maker I bought in the middle 1980s constantly. Got it for $10, though it retailed for ~$30 because the screen in it was stuck in an awkward position. The store manager let me have it at a discount. Nice. Must have made around 45,000 cups with it, have used it 3 times today already. Makes about 14oz of strong coffee. I buy whole bean organic dark roast at Costco and grind ~1.5lb at a time in my 650watt Oster blender. I have adapted that coffee maker, fixed it several times, the bakelite handle having broken, I jury rigged it nicely a few times. I cut ~2" diameter round filters out of those big ~6" ones using a DIY compass/cutter I made with wood, screws and a razor blade. I cut around 100 2" filters at a time. Change out the filter every few days, it's just paper, it disintegrates and/or gets clogged with coffee. I keep the machine looking nice.
Been using this system forever now. Very efficient. The steam blow-off safety valves will go bad if you're not careful, and I've gone through 4-5. It's necessary to not get the pressure up too high. Tough to get those valves, I can't find them for sale now, but I bought a couple cheapo espresso machines just for the valves, so I'm good now.
No Keurig for me.
