A few years ago my mantle clock stopped working so I took it in for repairs and the shop replaced the movement. It worked okay for about a year then stopped again. I took it back to the repair shop who sent the movement back to Germany for repair (under warranty). The clock worked for about another three months then died. I said "screw it" and put it away in a cupboard where it has been for almost two years. A few moments ago, I heard the clock chiming in the cupboard.

Those old mechanicals can be sensitive to balance. If you're interested in getting it going, try shimming the feet in different directions, and see if it takes.

I found an old axe in the garage awhile ago. I want to say it was my father's when I was a kid, but it doesn't look as I remembered. Been a long time, so it;s hard to say. The handle was cracked, and I wanted to set a new handle. While I was beating the head off, I broke some of the blade towards the handle. It's not on the cutting edge, and it'll likely last the rest of my life, but it pisses me off I made such a stupid mistake.

I'm used to using mauls, and setting the handles on those. You can beat the shit out of them, and it won't hurt at all. This axe had a hardened edge welded to a softer base. The hardened portion is what broke. I should have recognized that, and used some other way of getting the handle off. Stupid mistakes are the worst mistakes, cause they should be easily preventable :^(

Fitting mudguards on my cycle...
Why is there no standard for these things? Imagine buying parts for your PC that you then need to manipulate & modify into your case before use.

I was splitting wood today, and loaded ~300# in my wheelbarrow to put on the front porch. The tire went flat 150' from the destination. I had to hand carry the wood the rest of the way.

You might be asking yourself. "Why didn't you just use the hand pump you keep in the back of the truck, and inflate the tire?"

Great question! Some fuckhole decided a wheelbarrow is a great application for tubeless tires. After a bunch of rope tricks to get the bead to seat while I put air in, and a half hour later, I got air in the tire...

Well, that sucked, but I've got some leftover shepherds pie in the fridge, and I'm starving. I'll add a can of green beans, and in four minutes I'll get dinner. Look in the fridge, and no shepherds pie(WTF?!). Look on the counter. Not there either. Look in the freezer... Of course that's where I put it. Only makes sense  Now it's got to go in the nuker for twice as long, so I get that started, and go to get a can of green beans. No fuckin' green beans. Had to use corn instead. Not the biggest fan of corn. It was alright I guess. Beer time now. Let's see if I can do that without a big hassle...

Solid wheelbarrow tires, learn to love them. They're kind of hard to love as they ain't as good as a properly inflated tire but they don't go flat.

That's an option. Might be the best option cause I don't use wheelbarrows much. I'll look around, and do that, or perhaps buy a tube to put in my tubeless tire.

It is a lot of work to clean out my 1 bay garage of crap from my kitchen remodel that completed a couple months ago. I had a ton of demo related stuff shoved in there, old flooring / sub floor, tiles, cabinets, can lights, molding and misc garbage. I haven't really been able to use my garage bay since Oct. It has also finally started to get a bit warm in PA as well, and I had to cut up all the old flooring and molding to fit in garbage bags. Once it is cleaned out I'm going to finally move my Viper in there though. I usually keep it at this old lady's house since her garage rules and I don't want anybody to know I have the car. I am irritated about not being able to access the car 24/7 though, and it is 10 minutes away. I've been buying some car tools so that I can work on my cars at my house finally, since I normally do that stuff at my in-laws or my parents since my driveway isn't flat and my garage bay is quite thin.

I sent a donation form to Habitat for Humanity for them to pick up the cabinets and an old buffet so hopefully they are decent enough for them to just pick up and take. Also gave away the old fridge / microwave. Fridge was picked up a couple hours after posted, no issues, but the microwave was to be picked up "within the hour" which turned into a day later. When stuff is free you gotta get a move on yea??

Pulled into a parking spot at Dunks to pickup my pre-ordered, no wait Iced Coffee and some B in a 300 series Mercedes whipped her door open into my side mirror. No apology, no acknowledgement she just waltzed into Dunks on her cellphone the whole time. No damage to done to my car, but boy was I steamed. And no I didn't confront her because it was 7:15AM and I didn't want to start my day with an argument.

Got a new job. It's a bridge deck replacement over a highway. The state wants grades on the existing deck at intervals shown on the original plans from 1966. I shot the shit out of that deck, but I've been stressing over the grades. The original plans are based on road geometry that used a spiral curve. The new plans have sensibly gotten rid of the spiral, but I have no good way to make the plans coincide. I don't /think/ I have enough data. I say think, because I'm not too sure. I don't want to say I don't have enough, then look like a dumbass when some engineer pulls a bunch of math out of his ass to prove me wrong.

In any case, it's a stupid task. The current deck's gonna be history, and there's no good reason to even have the grades for it. I've already wasted too much time on this, and I've about 90% given up. A set of plans shouldn't require major gymnastics. If you have to put too much work in it, somebody did something wrong

They should keep the spiral curve. They are great for reducing speeding infractions.
I hate spirals. I don't completely understand them, and haven't made the time to cause I seldom run into them. They were popular on highways from the 50s-60s, cause engineers get bored, and want to use all the math they learned in school. I suspect they fell out of favor due to the hospital bills from surveyors kicking down their doors, and beating the shit out them :^D

They still have a good application on railroads, but I don't do much rail work. For basic layout, I have software that'll do spirals, but they still make everything harder than it should be.

Ze cockroaches are taking over. Death toll in the house overnight is 13.
And I thought the 3 encountered the night before were a lot, for one night.

Soon the place will become known as Chez Roachez.

My limited understanding is that they are supposed to get rid of the "jerk" as you enter a turn. That said, as a geographer, all roads are just a bunch of dots connected by as many small straight segments as the analyst felt like digitizing that day.

I-75 just south of Cincinnati used to have glorious spiral curve. The spiral tightened northbound as the road descended a big-ass hill down to the Ohio River. Giant blinking signs were not enough. So many trucks rolled over that the state DOT eventually rebuilt the road to take out the curve.

Heh, yeah, I used to live there. That's a pretty neat drive as the city just opens up in front of you.

Yup. On road applications a simple compound curve is more than sufficient, and easier to compute. You could probably get away with compound curves on railways, but I suspect the stacked curves would get more complicated than doing a spiral, especially with the fancy spurs they use entering industrial areas.

I just tried looking up a felling cut picture for taking down trees, and got a bunch of kids cutting themselves with razors :^/ Has that always been a thing, or is it kinda new? Never heard of it when I was kid.

I'm officially sick and tired of winter and just want it to end. It's only April though. :/

We got a +15 day yesterday and I wore shorts and almost got sunburned because I braved the sun without sunscreen for a bit. It gave me a sweet taste of summer. Bang, back to winter today.

At least the 25cm of snow we were supposed to get missed us so there's that.

Hung my laundry out this morning. It was foggy, but supposed to clear up before getting cloudy again. Well, it's still foggy, and the radio says clouds will be increasing today. Not sure what >100% clouds will look like, but I suspect they won't help my laundry dry :^/
