Ripped some black oak with my little 40cc echo, and it was slow going. Didn't feel like bringing out my big saw.

I've pulled a lot of interesting wood out of my fallen oak, but I have the nagging feeling I'm not making best use of it, burning it up in the stove. I think there' interesting stuff that could (have) been done if I were smart enough to recognize it. I've saved a couple small slabs, and some interesting looking burls and squirrel holes, but I don't think I've maximized its potential. Poor end for a tree that started before the USA was a country :^/

I just pulled my Morakniv to cut some plastic, and realized I left my survival knife stuck in the ground on a job. It's on the way to work, and should still be there due to little traffic, but I don't like leaving my stuff laying around. Careless... :^S

Arg!

I recently changed phone/internet plans because my fair telecom jacked the rates on my previous plan such that it was cheaper to upgrade to faster service than stick with the old, slower service (phone company logic). The first bill arrived under the new plan so I dove in to see what undisclosed fees they tacked on. And there was this:
Code:
Local phone service:
                 Additional listing $4.75
I said, "WTF!" and "WTF" said I. Then I said, "How long has this shenanigans gone unnoticed by my good self?"

I inspected a few prior bills to learn that 1) the phone company is scum and 2) I am a dumbass.

An online chat with a phone company rep got the additional listing cancelled. The rep's attitude was, "Yeah, you were a dumbass and we're weren't about to clue you in. Thanks for the fish."

For the youth of this forum: The "additional listing" charge was for having both my name and my wife's name listed in the phonebook, a book that hasn't been published in at least five years. I was paying $57/year for literally nothing.

For the geezers of this forum: Phonebook is no longer recognized as a word by the FF spell checker.

Got some nice new boots in anticipation of winter/cold weather, back in late October. I liked them and wore them probably about 2/3rds of the days of the week (the rest being my older boots). No hard use, just walking to/from my car at work, at grocery store, at restaurants, that sort of thing. Then when trying on slippers at the store this weekend I notice this B.S.:

F'ing things are delaminating in the toe (mainly the left boot, but right probably isn't far behind)! WHAT THE THE F?! These badboys were $200 too, and it's been like six weeks of wear! Unbelieveable. I do hit the toe of my boot a couple times, usually before going into my apartment (to knock off salt/dirt/etc), but that absolutely should not cause them to delaminate like that, cause none of my other pairs of footwear have this issue.

I sent the company (Thursday Boot Co.) a message via Facebook on Sunday cause I wanted to include the picture, but haven't heard anything back yet. I'll check today if they've answered, and if not, maybe send them a message via their contact form (and add +1 to my disgust with them). I'm not sure I want another pair of these boots, despite liking them, cause I feel like it'll just happen again. But I dunno, we'll see. Bummer though.

I could find some easily enough. If I do something, I want to do it myself though. What brought all this on was I accidentally make a camp chair cutting an unusual fork in a limb. I'm gonna keep it for an outside chair /somewhere/, but it would have been better if I saw it beforehand, and did something on purpose.

Maybe the bench I intend on making in the trunk will be the cool thing I get from it. My intention is to leave ~15' of the trunk where it lays, then cut a bench into the middle of it(5' long?), so when your sitting in it, you'll be surrounded by tree. That'll require doing stuff I haven't done before(mainly boring into the tree with the saw), keeping everything level, and matching my cuts up sawing blind. If it turns out, I may or may not cut over the seating area with an axe to give it a more rustic finish. I also may or may not try some decorative carving on the exposed cut sections. That's really pushing it though. I'm not particularly artistic.

I may have mentioned before that I have feral cats living and/or hunting in my yard. Well, that was about a year ago I guess and I now have a new crop of catlets. They're not really kittens any more but not quite cats either.

Several knits ago it was fairly cold for this time of year in central NJ. Probably low 20's. One of the catlets was sitting on the walk just looking at me. Since in the past they've always run away without any attempt to gauge my intentions, I took this as a sign that it was asking for help.

I've been a vegetarian for while now, maybe 1-2 years? I have no sense of time. So I had no idea what I could give them. Eventually I realized that I'd picked up some beef jerky for a friend but hadn't had the chance to deliver it yet. I put that out and tl;dr, the next day it was gone.

Take note. This is how they suck you in. First it's a free meal. Then it's free food every day. Pretty soon you're doing research on building cat shelters, wondering if you can get health insurance for cats you're not technically related to, wondering what the world is going to be like when they have their own kittens, and so on.

As you may have guessed, I'm now at the shelter building stage. I have some very large portable deck trunks that I don't use any more and I've put those up on disused pallets near the back of the house in a spot with a conveniently placed electrical outlet. My plan at the moment is to close them up as best as possible and drill holes in the sides for cat friendly/raccoon unfriendly access pipes. Next steps will involve providing some sort of insulated and possibly heated accommodations inside the trunks.

Apparently the smallest opening that a cat could still get through but would be too small for an adult raccoon is around 3 inches. That seems kind of tight to me but I'd be very interested in hearing opinions on that. Since that would be the internal diameter of the piping, the actual hole would have to be a bit larger.

I don't have a very good track record for following through on projects like this - or projects generally to be honest. But if it looks like I'll be able to, I'll start a thread and post pics. There probably won't be any cat pics any time soon though.

But since you managed to make it this far, here's a pic of another visitor. I'm guessing it's a muskrat maybe? Except it doesn't really look like the ones that google serves up.

I'd say groundhog, but it's the wrong time of year for groundhogs.

For the kitties... An old cooler makes a good insulated box. I wouldn't worry about the raccoons. They're more devious than cats, and if they want in, they'll get in. I'd just build a nice shelter, and let the critters sort it out.

HVAC was not heating right. Guy comes out and it's low on freon. The unit's been a POS since day 1. Anyway, he's still not happy with the temp difference and then realizes that the air flow at the return is weak. Short story, the duct at the unit has partially deteriorated and collapsed so we've been sucking outside air for who knows how long.

It sounds like you have a heat exchanger. You must have been drawing buttloads of electricity. The utility company probably had you targeted as a grow house.

That's why the swat truck has been down the street...

If that's the same thing as a heat pump, then yes. He said it's been that way for a while and out electric bills were abnormally high last winter. Not so bad during the summer but it was pulling cool air from under the house.

I've got a video but I can't seem to get the file to upload. It's a .3gp clip.

Heat pump. Hmph. I should have known that. I think a furnace heat exchanger is passive not powered but that's what I meant.

I'd recommend a freeware converter but all of the ones I used to use seem to have gone to the dark side and started adding things like usage limits and maybe not actual malware but getting close.

Handbrake should handle conversions.

My daughter linked a Dooney & Burke Nightmare Before Christmas bag she wants for jul. $250 for Chinese shit. It's not the money I mind. It's paying for name that's nothing but a name. You could stick any name on it, and it'll still be Chinese shit. Why do women have to impractical suckers?

Bourke...

Maybe she's trolling you.

Yeah, that must be it. Get her a canvas ammo bag from WW2. I have one that I carry tools in and it tough as hell.

She can thank me after Christmas.

I think it is time for a father - daughter failure to communicate.

Been debating the bag. On one hand, people like what they like, and jul's about getting people what makes them happy. On the other hand, fuck sending $250 to China. I think I'm going with fuck China. Looking on etsy, and Bags by April has some nice looking bags, and one of them is Nightmare Before Christmas. $56, and made in USA. There's a couple others I think the girl might like even better, but not NBC themed. It'll do...
