My family is not exactly going to stock pile a ton of food, but we're going to make sure we have some on hand in case we hit economic hard times. Maybe a few weeks worth of food or something. Being in the midwest, it's probably a good idea just because we could get snowed in for a few days with a bad storm and we live in a small town with the closest grocery store 5 miles away.

eyah since a economic hit only last 5 weeks..

I don't mean something to last us through hard times. Just something to help out. Having to spend, for example, $40 less per week for a month on food because we have some in the cellar would be a big help.

I wouldn't mind having enough food to sustain my family of 4 for 2 months but the amount of money it would take to get that much food plus, from what I've read, even most canned food doesn't last more than a couple years. Restocking a $1,000 cache of food every other year would hit the checkbook hard.

You rotate stock and only stock things you use. When something goes on a good sale, buy it and put it in the back of the stack. Keep an eye on expiration dates so you don't forget to use something in time (bearing in mind that canned goods are still safe after the expiration date for quite awhile.) Don't buy something and stick it in the basement, throw it out every other year and replace. That's just stupid and wasteful. Keep all your foods together, stacked neatly and organized in a logical fashion, and just keep a larger quantity of it around (non-perishables.) You just need to get organized and keep everything in a convenient location (as near to the kitchen as possible if not in the kitchen itself.)

I don't stockpile food for emergencies, but I live way out in the country and can't just run to the store for one thing, so I try to keep my pantry and freezers full enough that I don't have to go shopping every other day (I hate shopping and I do all of the shopping for my family myself). I am usually conveniently prepared to weather any storm up to a couple week long, and perhaps even a couple months if needed.

From what I'm reading now most canned goods will last indefinitely but the color or taste may deteriorate. Better that than dead.

My wife and I will probably clear out some space under the stairs and stock up on canned foods, water, and can openers just in case.

I have a family of 4
Don't forget stuff like powdered milk, vegtable oil, toiletries, salt, sugar stuff you can trade on when your neighbours are out too.

Don't stockpile. You'll create shortages. And higher prices. :|
Buy the usual amount and everyone will have enough.
