In Sunday talk show appearances, Ms. Rice said the program was intended to eliminate the "seam" between American intelligence operations overseas and law enforcement agencies at home.

the "seam", otherwise known as the Constitution, when was it repealed ?

Topic Title: What form of government are we living under now ?
Topic Summary: since we are no longer a Constitutional democracy ?

Title should specifically ask Republicans this question.

Don't expect an answer.

We never lived in a constitutional democracy. We lived in a representative democratic republic. All that's happened, is that "representative" and "democratic" were eliminated to make for a sleeker, easier to remember "republic".

Don't get hysterical. The Constitution still stands, and Congress will reel in the President if he oversteps his bounds. Congress is -if anything- possessive over their power 'turf.' If you are really that concerned, write your representatives and senators.

The "seam" is a concept conjured up by the White House spin control not-sies. It's not like the concept of constitutional rights exists for suspects considered guilty before proof is found of wrongdoing. It's not like the monitoring of overseas phone calls is prying into the lives of many Americans who would flip out if accused of being called terrorists. It's not what you think.

It's called a Republic. Same that we have had for over 200 years. I don't know where people get this idea that we live in a democracy.

de·moc·ra·cy P Pronunciation Key (d-mkr-s)
n. pl. de·moc·ra·cies
Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives.
A political or social unit that has such a government.
The common people, considered as the primary source of political power.

Ya, strange idea.

Too bad politicians aren't the 'people.' They are bloodsucking parasites.

I think the federal government is so far detached from the 'people' it is amazing.

Congress needs to jump in and do this then. Unfortunately the Republican Senate and House seem to feel that they can maintain control of the White House forever, and therefore don't mind the President changing the balance of power. They will regret it when a Democrat takes office in 2008 and uses the power they've given the office to reverse all the problems that Republicans are causing right now.

We're living in an Idiotocracy where the government, the media, businesses, and entertainment cater to near-mindless masses.

Are you people stupid. The US has never been a Democracy.

It is a Representative Republic. Always has been and for the time being will continue to be. With all of the doom and gloom spouted by the left, just think of it this way - the nation has weathered much worse and survived. As a matter of fact, the very design of the government prevents one man or one generation from doing too much harm. The system is too slow by its very nature to allow this.

I just get angry when the ignorant can't get our base form of government correct. Shws the pure lack of knowledge in some sects of the American political spectrum.

I disagree to the extent that those we elect do not represent the people, they represent the Party. No where in the Constitution does it mention two party rule which is what we have. Many who framed the Constitution were concerned about just this thing, but by that time it was too late. Parties of a kind formed and it would have been impossible to regulate them.

In theory anyone who meets the Constitutional requirements can be President, but in fact they must meet Party requirements first, and they have always been first and foremost for themselves and it seems far more the case in the last decade or so.

Who really believes that Bush and Kerry are who we wanted as choices? Oh yes we got to pick from a list that the parties wanted. The solution? An explicit Constitutional amendment on the powers of political parties, or even an outright ban.

Regardless of you view on my suggestion, consider this. Could it realistically happen? No. The parties would never allow it. That is a true assessment of their power over our government.

What form of government? An old Republic that is slowly moving towards Empire. The criminals in the White House have no respect for the rule of law, and its f*cking time that conservatives realized this.
