Your story is cool and all that, and imma let you finish, but the Ikea jerker desk was the best of all time!

I was SO MAD when they stopped making that desk. Fredrik is a cheap, crappy replacement.

I disagree that all Ikea is crap. Some of the stuff is great, and it's fairly obvious when you are comparing something that sucks, to something that doesn't.

I bought a desk there a few years ago... The thing is really solid.. It's well designed IMO. I searched high a low before settling on my Ikea desk.. It is one of their better quality pieces.

That in no way speaks for everything they sell, however.

Agreed. Some of Ikea's stuff is garbage, some of it is quite decent.

Some Ikea may be good but solid wood or not there is only so good a piece of furniture can be if you're breaking out the screw driver and assembling it!

A drill with an allen wrench bit is your friend when assembling Ikea furniture. You can get everything much tighter that way.

Why all the Ikea hate? I bought a desk from Ikea over 10 years ago and it is still holding my desk things just fine. I have moved 3 times since then. Not professional movers either. Drunk friend movers who drop things and aren't careful.

Yeah not happy about the Fredrik myself. The Gallant series looks pretty sweet though as far as computer desks are concerned.

one word: Amish.

Another way is Good Will or house sales. You might have to refinish, but you can get really good, solid furniture for a fraction of it's original cost. And then there's the pride of having something you helped create.

Amish furniture. The local store here buys a lot of stuff from the Amish and resells at a high price. The stuff is very solid, and you can custom order.

Hopefully, you can find a similar place near you (sans high prices).

Actually mrs went into a store today that sells amish furniture and the guy there said it's as good if not better than stickley. I guess he jumped up and down on one of their drawers to make his point. Anyway, she was very impressed with its quality and prices were not bad, like a decent dresser for $1200-1300. We may end up buying slowly from that place. I just can't take laminates and all that crap.

Where are you living these days? If you are anywhere within a day's drive of High Point, NC it's worth a trip IMHO. Furnitureland South and a few other gigantic stores in the area.

i 100% agree here, Mennonites also qualify for this. both groups of people make amazing products and are great to work with. you get real hard wood for very reasonable prices.

It's just a single anecdotal experience, but my neighbor got Amish stuff for his bedroom set, and I wasn't too impressed. It was built well, but it was veneered plywood and I just didn't think it was all that attractive. Plus he paid $3,500 for it. So maybe it's a YMMV thing.

Too far but we had friends who buy their stuff from there. They were quite wealthy, though.

Your neighbor is an idiot. Why would he buy laminated plywood?

You can spend a ton if you want to, but you can also pick up quality furiture for a lot less than you'd pay at the local stores. I guess it all depends how long you plan to keep the stuff you buy.

COME ON DOWN!

God I would try to avoid that place with a passion. I've seen couches from there rip down the seems within two years of buying them. There's a place in RI and probably a few others around that advertise in local papers. They're basically warehouses that bought a ton of surplus stuff and sell it pretty cheap. I got a queen size bed for like $150

I, too, can't stand Bob's Craptastic Furniture. So many commericals AHHHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

"Why spend more, when you can more for less?

"Their tempur-pedic provides a great nights sleep, but its 6 inches thick and $1499. My Bob-o-pedic is 8 inches thck and only $499. Why pay more?"

Don't get me started on the claymation commericials.

I did have to check it out locally. We went back to that store tonight and bought a set made by Yutzy woodworking, an amish maker from Ohio. The store sold only American-made, mostly from Amish in Ohio. It's all solid wood with dovetail joints and I think for the price we wouldn't have gotten anything else better (Mrs did check out a bunch of places!). Thanks for the ideas!
