Ok, For the last 5 years I have gotten out about ten times a year.... this summer I want to get serious!! Just for fun of course! Anyway, If I par 2 or 3 times for a round of 9 its a decent day... I want a club that will be semi-forgiving and will give me a little room to work into, definatley not an expert club (if i had to i would lean towards room to improve)!! Here is what I am looking at!

www.sportsauthority.com

Taylor Made SuperSteel Irons, Steel Shaft Mens - for $399.99 minus a 15% coupon code

OR

Top-Flite XL 2000 Irons 3-PW Steel Shaft Mens - for $399.99 minus a 15% coupon code

Both come out to $340 shipped!

Anyone know where to go for quality reviews???

Thanks!!

Hey!!!

haha.. i just purchased the Taylormade Supersteel irons last week from them, dont count on the coupon code working though, it only works with specific email addys. The taylormades have to be ordered over the phone so this is how i found it out... She tried putting the code in for me and it wouldnt work.

Anywhoo... I LOVE the clubs, amazing quality and feel to them. On the other hand, ive heard nothing but GREAT things about the Top Flight's your considering, a very forgiving club. In the end i chose Taylormade because of the name, plus they look more stylish.

Good luck making a choice!!!

Taylor Made are great clubs, hard to imagine getting a set for $400. I have no idea about top flight clubs.

Review site <--didn't check them out, but looks like they have a few reviews

From the review site above:

Top Flite XL 2000 - These are large, deep cavity back irons that inspire confidence in the user. Originally designed to capitalize upon the huge success of the XL 2000 ball line, these friendly irons have shown themselves to be very capable performers. For game-improvement irons they are capable of hitting strong, aggressive shots for fine distances. They feel rock-solid and dependable. Multi-cambered soles offer some good versatility, as well.

Taylor Made - The Firesole is another very popular line from Taylor Made. They have deep cavities and tungsten sole weights in the longer irons. Lively and long, these are handsome, friendly irons that appeal to many levels of golfers. High-hitting and easy.

They're pretty equivalent clubs in terms of design and quality and both would be suitable for a beginner looking to improve. But if you'd like to "get serious" and want a club that'll forgive some mistakes now and still be a good club if you progress to intermediate or above, I'd recommend looking at the Tommy Armour 845s or 855 that Sports Authority also has for around the same price. They're great game improvement irons, but have the playability that makes even really good players happy. But before buying anything from Sports Authority, check out local golf stores. Most will have hitting areas so you can check out the feel of various sets before buying, so you should be able to test them against each other to determine which you like best. Those are all pretty popular sets, so most shops will have demo sets available.

Go to your local golf store and see if you can try them out. A lot of local stores have "golfing cages", they let you try out clubs so that you can test their feel.
It really isn't a matter of which clubs are "better"- rather, it is which clubs are better for YOU. Good Luck!

I agree. I was looking to buy from sports authority as well, but ended up going to a local golf store and swinging a few sets of irons at the indoor range...it really helped me make up my mind.

yeah, i paid a little more, but i got personalized help and felt sure about my purchase.

Listen to Rarr, the best set for you and everyone is the ones you hit the best, farthest, and most consistantly. I've seen guys playing with northwesterners beating guys with pings, it all depends on what you hit best. BTW I have TM Firesoles, best 500 I ever spent, but I did demo a lot to find them. Hope it helps.

I really don't like golf cages.... hitting a ball into a net 20 feet away doesn't help me figure out accuracy or distance... although I can get a feel for how the club strikes. I was thinking someone who has been using the clubs for a couple of months could give me a better idea of how the clubs perform.

I wish I could take the clubs out to a golf range!

You're right, cages are actually bad for you, because they make you feel things that aren't there.

As for your choice, definitely, definitely the Supersteels. Solid clubs by a great company at a good price. XLs are OK, but if you're looking to improve, Supersteels will stay with you.

You need to go to the local shop and get fitted properly.
Things like length, lie angle, and grip size have a dramatic effect on ball flight.
For example, if the clubs you get are to long for your swing you will push/slice, if too short pull/hook.
It'll be a little more expensive to get the clubs fitted by a pro but you don't buy a set of irons every year.
You'll be happier in the long run.

TaylorMade is for twits. Most of these sets are ordered sight unseen and that is exactly the wrong way to select a set!!!

I ditto that advice. Go get fit properly, choose heads that you find appealing to the eye, and go with the type of grips where you don't ever need gloves. (You'll save alot of pain and money!) Expect to pay only about $40/ea for customized irons and around $90/ea for customized woods. I did exactly that last year and will never go any other way in the future. If you are on a budget then try to pay like $200-$400 and get a customized set of irons one year, then go back the following year and get fitted for woods. Its the best way to go.

come on MadRat, twits? well, possibly. Ernie played the firesoles for exactly one round. they suck. that's why they were discontinued after 10 months. way too soft. 40 bucks for custom fit? are they component clubs? it never fails to amaze me that the same people who complain about substandard computer components will say golf components are "the same." you are wrong. period. they are nowhere near the same. for 40 bucks you get shiznit. go get fitted. any self-respecting store who is in the works department of the major manufacturers will not charge you for the fitting since the wholesale price is the same. the Armour 855 is discontinued for almost two years. stay away. the 845 is also discontinued now. you can get a set of 3-pw of the 845 from any reputable retailer for 299.99 right now. Gen-X sports, which bought out TA, has sent out clubs for free as a net down on the sets of 845 still in stock. talk the retailer down to a price that's reasonable. and about gloves. there is no grip where you won't ever need gloves. if you sweat, you'll need one.

fitted for woods? they sold you a bill of goods. all you can fit on all woods (except for Ping) is the loft and shaft flex. lie angle is not changeable. there is a difference between finding the woods that fit, and getting "fitted" for woods. trust me. i do it for a living.

Anyone that buys the fad brandname over function is wasting their money. I used $40 for a number because any of the shops around here will do custom-fitted irons for that price or less. Sure you can pay more, but why blow hundreds more on your first set? I golf with a guy that blew $1200 on his irons for a name brand. Because he could... which is a good enough reason for me to call him a twit.

I guess the three hours hitting different lengths of shafts in woods to match my swing was a waste, eh? Could have fooled me. I'm hitting down the middle more than half the time now which is more than I can say for a majority of the players I've seen. If I could put the putting and chipping game together I'd be dangerous.
