I have been putting off upgrading for a long time. I got a 2700X with an MSI X470 Gaming Plus Max a while ago when video card prices were ridiculous. So I put it aside. I'm looking at finally getting a video card. AMD 7000 series are going to be released so the 6000 series should be getting a little more affordable. So which GPU? I'm leaning toward a 6800 at the moment but a 6700XT would be less money. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the input on the Vega 64. I thinking I will get a "place holder card". Maybe a RX580? Then decide on something more up to date. Prices are definitely coming down. I don't play at high resolutions. I usually play at 1680x1050. I play on my Sony 55" 4k LED TV and when I use higher resolutions I have trouble reading text. Eye aren't what they used to be. I'm also playing older stuff. And going from an FX8350 7970x2 to a 2700X RX590 would be huge upgrade for me. Any other sub 100 dollar suggestions? I do want to stick with an AMD card though. I used to use Nvidia way back but switched to AMD with my 8500.

If you cannot afford to get an rx6600 for $260:

Then yes, a rx580 is not the worst choice.

Know that any card you find will have spent serious time in the mines, so your likely looking at a fan replacement in the near future. Depending on how it was used, possibly a BIOS flash.

Some people will suggest a repasting is necessary, but I would avoid that if possible. The stock thermal pads always seemed good to me. Getting replacement thermal pads with the right thickness and stiffness is always a bit difficult.

Also take a hard look at the rx590s. They tend to be 18 months younger then the rx580s, about 6% faster, and consume a bit more power. But prices also run about the same as a rx580, and by virtue of being manufactured 18 months after most rx580s, it will have less wear and tear on it.

A RX6600 would work out well for that CPU. And you can pick them up for pretty cheap now.

The prices for used video card is still not even close to reality. I don't think the fact that new cards are starting to drop has dawned on people. Used RX 590's are going for 150. New Sapphire RX 6600 on Newegg 229.99. I wouldn't pay more than 75 for a used RX 590 probably not even that.

That is a pretty good price for a new card like that. I wasn't aware the 6600s were available for that already.
Just wait a few weeks for next-gen cards to come out and for the flood of Ethereum mining cards to arrive in full force. I suspect you will see 6700XTs for $300-$320 soon enough with rebates (currently $380). It is a meaningful performance jump over the 6600s.

I am buying now the top of the Asus Strix cards! They are about 2X the cost of their normal models! Just feels great and looks great too! I alway be when the new cards are released because they do not make them continuously; only one run and that it! If you still want it; it usually the refurbish or open box that cost the same as new 2 years down the road!

What is happening with Ethereum mining cards? I am planning on waiting a little longer. I'm not sure what I'll look at. I still might go with something super cheap just to get the rig up and running then decide on the final card. I'm hoping RX6800/XT's come down some. Ha I have a couple 5850's stashed somewhere

Ethereum went proof of stake three days ago, effectively killing gpu mining off. There are going to be a ton of gpus on the used market coming from mining farms. Could end up something like 2014 when Litecoin became unprofitable to mine on and there was such a flood of used Hawaii cards that you could get R9 290 for $200 to $230 new, with four free games, back when R9 290 was the RTX 3080 of its day. Though this time it's Nvidia who overproduced cards chasing miners who is sitting on a ton of unsold product.

Really hope we see 6600 XT hit around $200 new, as that's what I'm looking for to have something roughly PS5 level in my system. Unfortunately don't have the PSU for a 6700 XT, though if 3060 Ti drop below $300 I might bite on one of those instead to get near 6700XT performance with near 6600XT power consumption.

I'm glad I have the 1200 Watt Power supply from my old build. Sounds like Nvidia didn't care much about their core market.
