You might do better to have this moved to general hardware. Unfortunately, to play the latest games at high settings and framerates, you will probably need a cpu upgrade as well as a better gpu and possibly PSU as well.

The 4170 is not a particularly great cpu for gaming. I would not recommend a 600 dollar gpu with that cpu, even overclocked. However, you would see a very good increase in performance from only a gpu upgrade by going to something like an R 270/280 level gpu.

I am not clear on exactly what PSU you are using. Is it the generic one that came with the case or the XFX 550 watt? For sure I would not try to run an overclocked 4170 and a higher end gpu on a generic 450w psu. The XFX 550 watt might be sufficient.

You first need to clear up the PSU confusion before anything else.

Look inside your case and read the PSU model number from the PSU sticker.

If you have a 450W generic PSU, odds are the highest you will be able to go is a GTX 750Ti since it uses extremely low power while providing decent gaming performance in all the latest games.

I don't think your CPU is capable of running any demanding game on ultra with 60 fps, regardless of which GPU(s) you pair it up with. With that said, I would look for an AMD graphics card so you can remove some of the CPU bottleneck in games which support mantle (BF4 is one of them) and you will be able to get 60 fps on ultra as long as you have the graphics card for it. With that said, I would not go any higher than a 280x on the GPU side.

Another thing to consider is that with a £600 budget, you should be able to upgrade to an Intel i5/z87 motherboard as well as the graphics card.

I concur that the cpu is going to be a bottleneck, its AMD bulldozer which was barely keeping up even back when it was released.
And the psu sounds like an XFX not FXF.

Your FX-4170 should not be paired with a graphics card more expensive than an R9 270 at most, it's going to limit performance beyond that. Granted, the R9 270 is no slouch and can run any modern game smoothly, provided you scale back on the image quality a bit.

If you have up to £600 to spend, you could easily afford an upgrade to Intel i5 Haswell and a suitable mid-high range graphics card like 280X, even R9 290.

Yeah, for what you're asking for you'll need to save up a few hundred more for a new PSU, motherboard, and CPU on top of the GPU. Mantle would help you in BF4, but for Day-Z and Crysis 3 you don't stand a chance.
