I'd be really happy if I could find a large capacity, slow drive to use simply for storing backups. I remember back in the late 90's I had a 12 GB Quantum Bigfoot drive when 4-6 GB drives were the norm. The Bigfoot was slow as molasses in January, but the extra space was a welcome trade-off.
Why don't we see that anymore? Where's the slow 4200 RPM 1.5-2 TB drives? Slowing down the spindle speed should allow them to increase the areal density as well as stuff more platters in there because there would be less friction and less heat that if you tried to stuff 5 platters in a 7200 RPM drive.
