What happened to my Shrek DVD? (pic)

This is weird. I haven't played this disc for a couple of months, so recently I decided to watch it again. It plays fine all the way to the middle (the Robin Hood scene) when the DVD player suddenly starts skipping and stuff. After a while it totally gives up. I eject the disc and find hundreds of tiny holes in the reflective media. Now the whole disc will not play again. How could this have happened???

Maybe something got spilled on it. Or maybe it's just defective, I'll go check and see if ours has same problem... picked it up w/ a blockbuster deal way back when... going to check...

Hmm, there's 2discs in the set, 1WS and 1PS version, and neither has a problem. We've played it a few times too. Are there holes on the label side?

Just what I was thinking...DVD Rot. :|
I would contact the manufacturer of the DVD and tell them you have a defective disc and would like to exchange it.

Thanks for the initial replies.

I don't think that it is any sort of spill, fungus or deterioration, though. I always store my DVDs in their original case and keep them in a cabinet away from sunlight and moisture. Furthermore the DVD was fine when I popped the disc in, so I suspect something happened while it was playing.

Perhaps the aluminium was already weakened by *something* and the heat and high speed rotation of playback caused it to finally give in. Or maybe my DVD player has gone wacko... but I tried another disc in that same player and it survived.

It was the full frame disc that died... I couldn't see any holes on the label side - had to hold it up towards a light in order to see the holes properly.

I think I'll give the widescreen disc a try this weekend and hope that this is just an isolated incident....

email disney or whomever manuf. that CD, since nothing has been spilled on it, they'll probably replace it for you for cost of S&H to return the disc. I'd bet on it.
