What happened to Sony?

During my childhood, I remember thinking that Sony was the company.

I had always associated Sony as being top of the line in most every aspect.

Was I mis-informed all of these years, or have they just completely gone down hill lately?

I realize that they released PS3 about 6-12 months early, but what else has caused all of this recent hatred towards Sony?

Sony still has good shizzle though.

Camcorders? Come on, no one still comes close. Whether its Digital 8, Hi-8, MiniDV, Sony still has the best camcorders out there.

Then TVs? Sony's XBR2/XBR3 LCDs are THE BEST. Even if you take the Samsung version of it, Sony does have some improved circuity that makes the image slightly better.

Yes Sony is a ripoff, and I hate them a lot of times, but they do have SOME good products out there.

Walkman phones? Come on. SE's K800, K790, W810, K750, W800 all ran over Motorola's RaZr about 300 times over and Nokia's N91/N92 doesn't really challenge the field.

The Internet happened to sony.

Before they relied only on their name, and name only. Customers lapped it up as "the best". Basically the same as bose.

Now with the wealth of information out there they are exposed as a sham and will crumble soon. Samsung however is QUICKLY gaining on them - not surprising as it's samsungs mission to topple sony.

Was it? I never really noticed it much before. I used to like Sony products a lot, but I wouldn't even touch the high-end stuff now after all of the nightmares my friends and family have had dealing with their crap.

Releasing an extremely overpriced system a year after X-Box 360, as well as an extreme shortage right before Christmas (though a lot of that was due to greedy bastards on e-bay/craigslist/local newspapers)
A new Hi-def format that costs twice as much as Toshiba, even if they have better marketing, combo-ed with Blueray discs which cost more than either normal DVDs or HD DVDs.

God Complex, products that went to ******, Sony thinking they can put out sh!t products and people would still buy them because they were slapped with a Sony name. Lies about the PS2 before it came to market, bad DVD drives for the PS2 and taking their sweet ass time in recalling a known problem leaving many people with a bad taste and bad word of mouth being put out, the start of Sony's demise, having millions of people talking bad and having the Sony name in there. Putting out the PS3 with unproven technology, not enough units, and again thinking that because it is slapped with the Sony name they could get $600+ for them. Thinking the Wii with its inferior graphics, though low cast, would be no match for the all mighty Sony PS3 and Blu-Ray, who needs DVD and low cost, hell they are Sony. OPPS, everyone liked the lower cost and sh!ttier graphics better.

Most Sony video equipment is still very good, their audio stuff has always been comparative junk & the company is currently being run by a bunch of idiots who seem determined to run it into the ground.

People have gotten smarter. Personally it was over 15 years ago when I swore never to buy another Sony product.
