Around December of 2006 I was in market for a printer, namely the Canon Ip5200. I saw it at compusa for 150 and thought to my self that I should wait for prices to drop. Somehow between december and now the IP5200 has been discontinued and it is a sought after printer. Are there any alternatives to this printer? The specs of the Ip5200 are so astonishing that its hard to find anything comparable.

They moved the iP5200 into the business bracket for a while but new production had been discontinued for some time prior to that - looks like they are gone now. You can find new ones on eBay (currently $150. buy it now or starting bid of $135.) or even an iP5000 which sells at a premium due to the hassle-free, unchipped ink tanks (one new one there now at $300.). The iP4300 has similar performance and the same 3500+ nozzle head but it's considerably flimsier than the 5200 at two pounds lighter. I really like my iP4300 and you really can't beat it at under $100. Sometimes you can get the printer for less than the retail cost of a set of OEM ink tanks after rebate (about $75.). Of course it has the same drawback of the chipped ink tanks but there is a work-around to use clone tanks and they are still among the easiest to refill yourself if you're into that. The chips are still supposedly in the cloning process, but I wouldn't hold my breath... Regardless of the roadblocks Canon has put in the way of enjoyment of the iP4300 it is still head and shoulders above anything else. The iP4300 (as Canons have been since the iP4000) is PC Mag's general purpose inkjet printer of the year.

However, if you aren't in a tight situation that you have to do something right away, you might want to wait and see what happens with the solid-state head printers already announced from HP and may happen with other brands too. This tech has the potential to turn the inkjet market upside down.

I don't expect the iP5300 to show up here any time soon if ever - if they had intended to it would have arrived at the same time as the iP4300. Canon's new model time in the US is usually late summer/early fall. But they recently intro'd some new AIO models so maybe they've thrown the traditional model cycle overboard too.
