What happens when you have a 13-year old give up his iPod for a Walkman?

When the Sony Walkman was launched, 30 years ago this week, it started a revolution in portable music. But how does it compare with its digital successors? The Magazine invited 13-year-old Scott Campbell to swap his iPod for a Walkman for a week.

My dad had told me it was the iPod of its day.

He had told me it was big, but I hadn't realised he meant THAT big. It was the size of a small book.

It took me three days to figure out that there was another side to the tape. That was not the only naive mistake that I made; I mistook the metal/normal switch on the Walkman for a genre-specific equaliser, but later I discovered that it was in fact used to switch between two different types of cassette.

Another notable feature that the iPod has and the Walkman doesn't is "shuffle", where the player selects random tracks to play. Its a function that, on the face of it, the Walkman lacks. But I managed to create an impromptu shuffle feature simply by holding down "rewind" and releasing it randomly - effective, if a little laboured.

Personally, I'm relieved I live in the digital age, with bigger choice, more functions and smaller devices. I'm relieved that the majority of technological advancement happened before I was born, as I can't imagine having to use such basic equipment every day.

This actually made think of my wife and I talking yesterday because our son complained that we were watching a show on Live TV and not on the DVR and thus could not fast forward through the commercials. We both grew up in a time when the kids were the remotes and we had to turn the dialed knob to get to what our parents wanted to watch. Remote controls were amazing pieces of technology that not only changed the channels on the TV but also drove the dog batty because ours emitted a high frequency tone.

Now, anything less than watching a recorded TV show on the DVR so that we can fast forward through the commercials means we've gone back to the stone age.

I got caught out, when it was undecided between dvd or minidisc, i was sure that the world would go minidisc. Better quality, and you cannot scratch a mini disc. But no, the world is shit and i have a heap of music on mini disc that i cant play.

Its is amazing how fast the technology moves forward. I bought a Lcd Tv in Janurary and its all Rca inputs. my neigbour bought an lcd tv this week (same brand same model, bigger size) and its all hdmi inputs.

It was the size of a small book.

No 13 year old these days knows what a book is.

Personally, I'm relieved I live in the digital age, with bigger choice, more functions and smaller devices. I'm relieved that the majority of technological advancement happened before I was born, as I can't imagine having to use such basic equipment every day.

Would 13year olds know what a vhs cassette is? Or a 3.5inch floppy disk? im 24 and i used 8icnh floppy on the commodore 64 when i was a kid.

Technology is picking up with speed as each year marches on.

Did the 13yr old throw a tantrum though when you took away ipod?

Always kind of funny to introduce younger people to old technology. I'm not even that old, but when I was younger I was at a friend's house and they had one of those old rotary phones. They were kind of surprised when I actually knew how to use it, apparently most other kids had never seen anything like it before and had no idea what to do.

When I was in high school, one of my friends got one of the first CD players for cars. It was funny because he or his Dad spent hundreds of dollars on this CD player and it would skip ALL THE TIME. This would make trying to listen to any CDs unbearable.

From ~5th grade through 10th grade, I listened to music on a portable CD player. In early HS, I upgraded to one that could read MP3 CDs. Then in 11th, I got myself a Creative hard drive player. I don't remember the CD players ever being that big though - a little larger than the CD itself for the latter ones, and the first one was a little more rectangular.

My older brother did have a tape player, but that wasn't that big either. I guess since it was the late '90s....

I think there were only a few releases on mini disc. Its bullshit that the word went cd/dvd and now blue ray

Minidisc was way better.
