What happens when you put Data cables next to a Transformer?

Or a transformer next to data cables? The number of Cables is in the 200-250 range and the transformer is pretty big. About 4'x3'x2'. What are the best practices when it comes to clearance from transformers for data?

I ask because somone has decided to install a transformer right next to my cabinet. I'm worried about my gear.

Bolting a metal sheet on the inside wall of the cabinet will probably take care on whatever magnetic effect can come from the transformer.

How about the 600V power supply line running parallel to the data for several feet? Any possible issues with that?

You are getting close to the need for shielded / fiber at that point. Depending on the current load you can induce voltage in the data lines up to a level where you will burn out equipment.

The current BICSI recommendations are:
Provide the following minimum clearances:
1.2 m (4 ft.) from large motors or transformers.
30 cm (1 ft.) from conduit and cables used for electrical power distribution.
12 cm (5 in.) from fluorescent lighting.

Thanks!

The data cables are actually touching the supply power lines. The cables come to within inches of the transformer itself. Luckily it isn't turned on yet.

I would put those cables inside some metal conduit and place chokes on the lines where they enter the cabinet.
