My brother was homeless for several years in San Diego, CA. He slept behind a church, bathed at a gym and took a bus to work when he was able to hold a job. He swore to me he never panhandled.

He once told me a story about going to the beach with a homeless friend of his who panhandled for a living. When they got hungry my brother had about 20 bucks in his pocket until payday so he got in line to buy a burrito from a street vendor with some of his money. His friend was broke, but in the time it took my brother to buy and eat his burrito, the guy panhandled up over $20 bucks like it was nothing.

Panhandling can pay pretty well, I guess.

We get lots of homeless in the public library where I work, mostly to use a computer and the Internet. Many are looking for jobs, printing resumes or otherwise trying to function as normal. It's snowing here so some have been printing fliers looking for snow shoveling work.

One gentleman last week was doing homework for a living skills/computer class and trying to learn Word. He was having a rough time, but I applaud his efforts and did all I could to help him out. I've been told it's not my job to teach patrons how to use the computers, but I don't mind helping someone if they are doing all they can to help themselves.

On the other hand, I could do without the homeless who check out books we never see again, then get pissed and cause a scene because you tell them their accounts are suspended. Some of them seem to think being homeless releases them of all responsibility.

No Really, just didn't laugh at them when, we pulled up in the sandwich truck and they found out that they weren't getting ham anymore because there were some Muslim in the group. They were mean, I mean comeone you jerks it is a free lunch and you complain. I decided at that point that I was no helping anymore, the sense of intitlement in that group just pisses me off.

As bad as I feel for some homeless people (especially kids) who have become homeless through no real fault of their own, far too many are homeless because of drugs and alcohol. THOSE I have no sympathy for nor do I feel any obligation to help.

Thats fucking retarded. Normal people don't go homeless. Get the man a drink, that's all he really wants in life.


That being said, I've never given a homeless person anything, other then volunteering at a shelter for one day.

i like the way homeless people are portrayed as alcoholics, druggies and beggars. i wasnt any of those things. everything just went all wrong for me all at once. i would rather haved starved than begged for change. things have changed now and im settled

but what happens if things change for you, you lose your job, cant pay your bills, you'll on the the street scratching your head how shit went outta control so fast
