I just took a pay cut, but it won't really affect our lifestyle. We bought a huge new house in February and filled it with tons of new furniture. I suppose if my company was more stable I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new car, and I'm instead sticking with my current car if you can call that something I've given up.

Is that $400,000.00 mortgage payment killing you? Well, no one made you get it when you only earn 60k/year, asshole. Plus, the house was only really worth $150k to begin with.

:Q

he's right

we bought our house last year in November, when things were bad. We could afford a lot more than we bought, but we bought something well within our means that would provide some margin of safety if one of us lost our income. It would also allow us to save more money and live comfortably.

I understand the concept. What i was shocked about was the attack on the OP.

Started a new job @ the 1st of the year (after 7 months of being out of one). Just got a house, a new car, a fiance. Gave up netflix, newsgroup account, porn sites (I kid... Well maybe )

I stopped ordering soda or beer with any meal. I feel a difference, honestly.
I stopped making bar trips as well, only on occasions.
The recession only made me think about wasting my money, no change in my income or anything. However I upgraded my living situation to a 2 bedroom condo now, and bought some furniture.
Ok I guess I just balanced my spending.

NEVER! I know the economy is bad, but that's no reason to live like a barbarian.

But cereally folks, normally I take a vacation for a week to someplace nice. I'm just going to hang out @ home this year. I've made an extra effort to avoid driving anywhere if possible. Mainly just maintaining my moderate way of living. Any extra money I'm rolling into my morgatage and into my gun fund. Mainly morgatage though, $6,500 more and I won't have to carry PMI anymore! Wewt! That'll save me an extra $70 a month.

Home values dropping like mad have caused me to give up on the idea of refinancing my mortgage to get a better rate.

You just wake up or something? There was no attack on the OP.

You know if you switch from blow to crack you can still have the same amount of hookers. Better yet, get a crack whore and you can actually increase that number.

I gave up my job...and eating out. Oh, and unless I have an interview I gave up leaving the house too (which saves quite a bit of money on gasoline).

I've already cut all cost in every way possible.

I don't like wasting money.

Doing so had nothing to do with the "recession".

Ahh... that's how you put a bazillion miles a year on your bike - not working... I should have thought of that.

The not working thing happened very recently. I've been gainfully employed for 6 years prior to this.

I gave up bitching about my job. My friends who are unemployed and used to bitch about their jobs with me don't find it funny anymore for some reason....

Did you get laid off or did you 'give it up'?

I gave up cable tv, cut all non-essential spending. I've paid off some debts and then bought a house. So, not much?
