What holds the IHS to the AMD 64?

Hey guys I removed the IHS off my amd 64 to get better temps on the cpu, but the damn stock heatsink never made contact w/ the core. So I want to put the IHS back on to the CPU, but I dont know what AMD used to hold the IHS and the processor together. Any Ideas???

just buy an aftermarket cooler, i wouldnt try to put it back on.

but to answer your question, if you are content on putting it back on, it is some kind of epoxy.

If you're talking about the weird dry greyish stuff, or sometimes gooey/greasy greyish stuff - it's a paste that is necessary to reapply every time you mess with the heat sink and CPU. Clean it off of the heat sink and cpu with the highest percentage of rubbing alcohol that you can find - and do it gently..and then when reapplying the heat sink - put some new stuff on the cpu heat spreader (The back which pushes against the heat sink) - most people use Arctic 5 - and a little bit goes a long way.

This will ensure the lid stays on and that thermal transfer will remain good Text

What is someone who removed the IHS and expected his heatsink to still contact the core doing removing the IHS?

Hey guys the stuff that I'm talking about isn't the paste that goes on top of the core, but the actual stuff that keeps the IHS glued to the processor. I do not want to use any thing else then what came with it because it might ruin my processor. I dont want to take any chances.

What I linked will glue the lid back on while providing a good thermal interface, and it is neither conductive nor capacitive=perfectly safe to use.

I'm pretty sure you'll need to speak with AMD on that one, and I doubt you will get a favorable response. If in doubt ceramique or some other thermal paste on the core plus a dab of superglue on the corners of the IHS should do, but I'm not sure if superglue has any effect on the processor substrate. Or just follow the recommendation of the arctic alumina.

wel my cpu is working right now, and in case something happens because of other reasons, I would like to use the warranty. That's why I need to know what they used. Does anyone know?

You voided the warranty the moment you popped the lid so that point is moot. If the idea is to replace it with the intent of defrauding AMD if an RMA becomes necessary by making it appear the lid was never removed then you will find no sympathy or help here

LOL.

Why pop the top if you want the warranty? You had to know doing so would kill the warranty.

i popped off the lid because I'm a dumb ass that got caught into the hype of overclocking.

A lot of people overclock (probably >90% of regulars in the Video/Motherboards/CPU/etc boards). VERY few remove the IHS; typically only rich extreme overclockers (ie those using LN2/Dry Ice/etc).

Popping the IHS is not a good idea unless you know exactly what you're doing; it's been known to screw up many a P4, and probably ain't so good for the A64 either. They put it on there for a reason!

Those crafty idiots .

Honestly, you just caught some bad advice, that's all. Where did you hear that prying off the IHS was a good idea?

Go to newegg and look up the AMD Athlon 64 DTR processors. One of the reivews for one of them has a link that tells you how to get the DTR working in a desktop (the DTR doesn't have a heatspeader, so this should apply to you). I think that you would need a diferent heatsink to accomplish this, though.

Hi

I would get some GE silicon III, good at high temps. Remove all the other glue on both copper heat spreader (HS) and organic packaging. Place a very thin bead (about 1mm^3) around the perimeter of copper HS. Then place back on organic package glueing it. Place a heavy glass or something about 2lbs on top to and hold it there overnight. Oh and don't forget to put thermal compound on core either.

Only one heatsink setup works properly without modification with the non-IHS CPUs, the Thermalright SLK-948U Heatsink.
